Winemaker Notes

Profoundly flavored and impressively structured, yet still lacy and light on the tongue; a wine that will age for 30 years or more with grace.

Very bright red with ruby tones; looks like a young wine. Deep, dark red and black fruit aromas are complicated by cinnamon, black pepper, roast coffee and a hint of truffley underbrush. Wonderfully rich but classy and reserved, and not a bit heavy. Utterly silky, plush, energetic wine with a relaxed quality to its lively dark fruit and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes classically dry, with beautifully buffered tannins and captivating building sweetness. Amazingly, this 375-milliliter bottle seems still short of its peak, so I would imagine that well-stored 750s still need time. I'd guess 2022-2042 for 750s.

In contrast to the general style of the vintage, this is still aromatically austere though with coaxing, reveals wonderfully complex aromas of an incredible array of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of chocolate. The imposingly-scaled flavors are huge but refined, powerful but subtle and rich yet detailed with a stupendously long finish that offers intense minerality where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is genuinely stunning juice and not to be missed though I underscore that it is most definitely in need of further cellar time. Tasted multiple times with mostly consistent notes save for one bottle that displayed noticeable volatile acidity that may have been due to a faulty cork while another example displayed distinct lactic aromas.

Nice concentration of fruit and oak complexity. Medium-bodied, with blackberries and toasted and smoky notes. Plenty of toasted oak and chocolate on the finish, which kicks in with fresh acidity. Well-made. Drink now through 2009.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue, France
Many domaines in Burgundy can trace their roots back over 100 years, but only a handful can claim more than 200 years, to 1450 and the Chambolle vines of one Jean Moisson. Highly regarded as the greatest estate in Chambolle Musigny, today the domaine is headed by its 20th generation--Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, the granddaughters of the late Comte Georges de Vogue.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue is inextricably linked to the Grand Cru vineyard of Musigny, considered by many the pinnacle of Pinot Noir. Until 1936 the vineyard was conveniently split into just two climates--a narrow east-west track splitting the climate of Le Musigny from the more southerly and slightly smaller Les Petits-Musigny. The domaine ranks among the very best Burgundy houses.

Celebrated as some of the best wine in the universe, red wine from Burgundy, otherwise known as red Burgundy, is Pinot noir. In fact Burgundy is the birthplace of Pinot noir and the source of the planet’s most sensual, delicate, valuable and sought-after Pinot noir wines.

Understanding and enjoying red Burgundy can stay simple, with a basic knowledge of its subregions, become more intricate by dialing down to the villages and vineyards or become a life-long passion, exploring climats (plots of vines), vintages and the post French Revolution land ownership laws. In any case, a fine red Burgundy will display refined nuances of black currant, red fruit, earth, spice, alluring floral aromatics and have great elegance, complexity and longevity.

Most famous, praised and collected of Burgunday are those from the Côte d'Or. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the area now called Côte d'Or was under a warm ocean whose sea floor has, over time, shifted and decomposed into various layers of limestone, sandstone and clay interspersed with ancient fossilized sea creatures. This is what is referred to as the famous escarpment upon which all of the highly sought-after Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vineyards can be found. In other words, from north to south, the best vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux, Nuits-St-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard and Volnay follow the path of this ancient sea bed.
