Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Dark fruit with fresh notes of wild strawberry overflow from the glass. Black cherry, cedar, brown sugar and gentle toasty oak envelope the mountain tannin so characteristic of this site. The energy and intensity is apparent on the long and layered finish which evolves for over a minute without being heavy. Enjoy 2017 through 2030 and beyond.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Lotus, which is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, was harvested much earlier, October 9-18, and aged 25 months in French oak (more than 90% new). There are only 300 cases of this wine, which has a striking floral nose with hints of licorice, burning embers, incense, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. It’s powerful, lightly tannic, extravagantly rich and a great classic from a fabulous terroir and impeccable winemaking and élevage. Drink it over the next 20+ years.

Exhibiting layers of complexity, finesse and nuance, this offers a captivating opening mix of gravel-laced plum and blackberry flavors. Perfumed notes of sweet plum, cassis and cherry rise into the finish. The tannins are rich, loamy and fine-grained. Drink now through 2030.

I love the dusty, terra cotta, meat and plum character. Ripe and luscious. Full-bodied, tannic and chewy with some wood character. Citrus rind and dark berry. Mountain tannins here. Muscular yet fruity. Front-loaded. Better in 2019.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
