Winemaker Notes

Dark, powerful and richly textured with a lush foundation of fruit, the 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet is one of my favorites to date. Layered and complex, it is a great representation of the heights that the 2017 vintage was capable of. Shows a remarkable, seamless build-up of intensity from entry through the finish, coating the palate with complex layers of flavor and powerful but silky structure. Suave and detailed, with flavors of blackberry, fresh dark cherry, currant, dried fig, cracked pepper and dried herbs. Background notes of graphite, espresso, baking cocoa and plum lead to the long finish where dark fruit, hints of mineral, baking spice and mocha linger. Sophisticated fine-grained tannins. Exceptional for its combination of freshness, intensity, complexity. Beautifully balanced and drinking well now – but best with some time in the cellar (5-20 years) or decant an hour before enjoying.

This delivers a ripe and intense beam of cassis, creamed plum and blackberry fruit, all draped with warm cocoa and tobacco notes. Fleshy and broad through the finish. A very solid, forthright Cabernet. Best from 2020 through 2030.

A soft and fruity red with aromas and flavors of blackberries, chocolate and walnuts. Medium to full body. Flavorful finish. Drink now or hold.

Dakota Shy Winery Image
Dakota Shy grew out of the passion that friends and colleagues, Todd Newman and Tom Garrett, have for the wines, history and vineyards of Napa Valley. Their goal is to craft wines of substance and place that rival the best of what Napa Valley has to offer; from the pinnacle of quality and luxury to world-class Cabernet Sauvignon that can proudly be placed on the table and enjoyed every week.

After years of working together at Revana Family Vineyard, under the tutelage of Napa Valley winemaking legends Heidi Barrett and Thomas Brown, and vineyard manager Jim Barbour, these two friends set out with a determination to create a world-class estate of their own.

They began by sourcing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from a range of great vineyards throughout Napa Valley. These vineyards represent the arch of grape growing history in the valley from old, trusted sources to new, highly regarded plantings. Produced in limited quantities, their handcrafted Cabernets reflect the highest expression of the vintage.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
