Winemaker Notes

The young 2014 Poetry is a tightly wound rose bud that slowly unfolds its petals of aromas with time. The brooding and mineral laden nose is loaded with cold slate, graphite, and violets. Concentrated flavors of wild blackberry, Aztec chocolate, summer fig, and roasted red beets charm the entry while spice notes of cumin, sage, and cracked pepper lend complex and layered nuance. The wine’s luxurious velvety texture fills the palate as the lengthy finish continues with unctuous cassis, black olive, and clove. This is a wine with a lot of heart, so patience will reward the enduring collector who can stash this beauty away for a few years.

Blend: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot

Always one of the stars of Napa is Cliff Lede’s Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry and the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot. Never the biggest wine made by Cliff Lede, this is an elegant, classic Stags Leap example with finesse allied to beautifully pure power and balance. Deep and rich and possibly, at this stage, less expressive than some of its siblings, it is simply loaded and poised for a brilliant future. Consumers should give this 4-5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 25-30 years.

Cliff Lede Vineyards Winery at Cliff Lede Vineyards Winery Image

Cliff Lede Vineyards was established in 2002 by Canadian born Bordeaux enthusiast, Cliff Lede, following the acquisition of a sixty acre estate in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. With a focus on producing wines from estate vineyards, Lede tapped David Abreu, considered the best viticulturist in Napa Valley, to replant the vineyards. Lede decided to name each vineyard block after some of his favorite rock songs and albums—from “My Generation” to “Dark Side of the Moon,” creating what is known today as the Cliff Lede Vineyards “Rock Blocks.”

In 2005, a state of the art, 25,000 square foot winery and cave system was etched into a hillside overlooking the estate vineyards. Not only did Cliff create a beautiful property, he also assembled an unrivaled team that shares his passion for quality. Today, Winemaker Christopher Tynan crafts Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, with the flagship, Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the steep eastern hillside portion of the estate. In 2015, Cliff Lede Vineyards achieved both Napa Green Land and Napa Green Winery certification.
