Lots of black-olive and blackberry aromas and flavors. Full and linear with intensity and structure. Racy for the vintage. Energy. Class.

The 2021 Péby-Faugères is a gorgeous Saint-Émilion. Inky dark red cherry, lavender, chocolate, leather, licorice and incense fill out the layers, all framed by a generous kiss of new French oak. Péby is not materially better or more complex than Faugères, it's just done in a richer, more flamboyant style. –Antonio Galloni

Another undeniable success in the vintage is the 2021 Château Péby Faugères, a richer, medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant Saint-Emilion. Based on 100% Merlot that's still resting in 50% new French oak, it possesses rock-solid mid-palate density, ripe tannins, and a great finish and shows the fresher, more elegant style of the vintage while still bringing impressive depth of fruit as well as length. It's worth noting that this is the first vintage vinified and aged all in their new cellar. Production for the 2021 runs roughly 1,000 cases (70% of the production) and it hit a modest 13% alcohol. It's going to drink nicely for 15-20 years.

Super perfumed on the nose, really very floral with a touch of cherry liqueur. Quite high toned with graphite-laced red and black fruits and some fine, chalky tannins but excellent acidity that's really quite fun and playful. It stops a little abruptly in terms of fruit persistency but there is a nice cooling mintiness, liquorice and crushed stone element that lingers and a good weight overall. Balanced and well presented if not massively structured or persistent but a nice verticality here. Wood a bit on show at the end. Easy drinking style. Michel Rolland consultancy.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

As appears to be case with its sibling, Faugères, the limitations imposed by the vintage seem to have somewhat tamed this estate's tendency to push extraction to the limits. Exhibiting rich aromas of blackberries and plums, framed by a lavish application of creamy new oak, the 2021 Péby Faugères is full-bodied, ample and layered, but also impressively seamless and complete despite its aspirational style. It wouldn't surprise me if it were to age better than more heralded surrounding vintages.

Chateau Peby Faugeres, France
Chateau Peby Faugeres Winery Image
Chateau Peby Faugeres stretches over some 7.45 hectares and is located on a single clay and limestone slope, facing south-southeast and consisting of limestone soil on clay and limestone and molasse, soft chalk with silt and clay - a tertiary formation dating back to the upper Eocene and Oligocene.

Thanks to a combination of a rich old soil and a unique micro-climate, the presence of a river and the circular formation of the slope, this terroir in line with the south slope of Saint-Emilion is a world in itself, of which man is merely the custodian. His sole duty is to reveal its full character

Something which Silvio Denz and his team have taken to heart. This terroir is cultivated by means of biological viticulture and meticulous care on the part of the proprietors.
