Winemaker Notes

The ripeness and structure of the 2014 reds have good prospects for excellent tasting and cellaring potential. The 2014 vintage was marked by early flowering and very slow ripening. All the aromas were preserved because of the cool summer and the impeccable quality of the harvesting produced a high flying vintage.
Blend: 50% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc

The 2014 Carbonnieux Rouge has a delightful, clean and pure bouquet with gravel and sous-bois scents neatly interwoven into the blackberry fruit. It feels quite understated, but it gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a keen line of acidity that lends this impressive tension and vibrancy. There is not enormous length here, but the sorbet-like freshness wins you over. Keep in the cellar for 2-3 more years and then enjoy over the next 15-18 years.

This is a firmly structured wine, solid with fine tannins. Behind the tight facade, there is plenty of fruit as well as the acidity typical of the vintage. It will develop into a deliciously juicy wine. Drink from 2024.

The menthol and cassis nose here leads into quite a traditional wine, but the dry tannins aren’t a jot too much. This is a very solid wine that will gain in harmony with a few years’ ageing. Try in 2020.

COMMENTARY: The 2014 Château Carbonnieux shows excellent depth and richness on the palate. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits fresh aromas and flavors of ripe melon and dried herbs. Pair it with linguine and clams. (Tasted: June 14, 2021, San Francisco, CA)

Juicy, with a compact feel to the core of cherry and currant flavors, backed by bramble and tobacco notes, accented by a light loam echo. Should unwind nicely. Best from 2018 through 2024.

Chateau Carbonnieux, France
Chateau Carbonnieux Winery Image
The history of Carbonnieux goes back a very long way, and records show that wine was made there at least as early as the 12th century. Benedictine monks from Sainte-Croix abbey in Bordeaux replanted and renovated the estate in the 18th century. They took advantage of the exceptionally pale, clear color of the white wine to label it as "Carbonnieux mineral water", which they then proceeded to ship to the sultan of Turkey.

Marc Perrin acquired and restored the chateau in 1956. His son, Antony, currently manages the estate. The gravelly soil at Carbonnieux is perfectly drained thanks to the Eau Blanche stream that carries away any excess water. The 85 hectares of vines are evenly divided between red and white wine varieties. The white wine is fermented and aged in barrel for 10 months. The red wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in barrel, depending on the quality and characteristics of the vintage.

Recognized for its superior reds as well as whites, Pessac-Léognan on the Left Bank claims classified growths for both—making it quite unique in comparison to its neighboring Médoc properties.

Pessac’s Chateau Haut-Brion, the only first growth located outside of the Médoc, is said to have been the first to conceptualize fine red wine in Bordeaux back in the late 1600s. The estate, along with its high-esteemed neighbors, La Mission Haut-Brion, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Pique-Caillou and Chateau Pape-Clément are today all but enveloped by the city of Bordeaux. The rest of the vineyards of Pessac-Léognan are in clearings of heavily forested area or abutting dense suburbs.

Arid sand and gravel on top of clay and limestone make the area unique and conducive to growing Sémillon and Sauvignon blanc as well as the grapes in the usual Left Bank red recipe: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and miniscule percentages of Petit Verdot and Malbec.

The best reds will show great force and finesse with inky blue and black fruit, mushroom, forest, tobacco, iodine and a smooth and intriguing texture.

Its best whites show complexity, longevity and no lack of exotic twists on citrus, tropical and stone fruit with pronounced floral and spice characteristics.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
