Winemaker Notes

This wine has never before been seen on US soil. It is a kitchen-sink blend of Mencía, Domingo Pérez (Trousseau), Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), Mouratón, Caiño and Brancellao from a few different sites within the Chantada and Ribeira do Miño zones of the Ribeira Sacra appellation.

Raúl Pérez and Rodrigo Méndez present this as their basic mencía from Ribeira Sacra, blending fruit from vineyards in Chantada and Ribera do Miño. It rises above any such categorization with its lovely fruit flavors and ferrous tannins. The sanguine notes, the tension and the vivid flavors give it an enchanting and distinctly Galician character. For a venison stew.

The new entry-level 2015 Castro Candaz is a blend of grapes from different old vineyards in the Chantada and Ribeira de Miño subzones of Ribeira Sacra, where grape varieties are mixed in the field and the soils are mostly granite-based. Fermentation involves whole clusters and short macerations and the wines are matured in oak fudres and used 500-liter barrels. The wines are fresher than those from the Amandi subzone, with plenty of cracked black peppercorn, wild berry and herb aromas and some rusticity. The palate is light and refreshing, with high, effervescent acidity.

Raul Perez was born into a winemaking family, Bodegas Castro Ventosa, the largest owner of Mencia plantings in Bierzo. Raul grew up developing his ideals and worked at the family winery until 2003. His reluctance to compromise has made him both controversial and popular.

Bodegas Raul Perez produces extra limited, handcrafted, artisinal wines from varieties such as Albarino, Mencia, Bastardo and Godello from northwestern Spain.

Spanish red wine is known for being bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Of the Spanish red wines, the most planted and respected grape variety is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
