Winemaker Notes
The 1998 Fleur de Carneros marks the 12th vintage of this refreshing Pinot Noir. During those years, winemaker Melissa Moravec has been able to create a consistent style renowned as one of the finest Pinot Noirs available... and at an affordable price. Bright strawberry aromas and a hint of typical Carneros spice, prepares the palate for an abundance of fresh, vibrant fruit flavors complemented with a touch of French oak. The tannins are soft and the velvety fruit lingers long into the finish. This wine has become a staple on restaurant wine lists and in fine wine shops in the U.S. and abroad. Enjoy this wine with a wide variety of dishes like: grilled chicken, pasta, pork chops, turkey, calamari, crab cakes and salmon.
Founded in 1972 by Francis and Kathleen Mahoney and now owned jointly with Bill Hambrecht, Carneros Creek was the first winery to be built in the Carneros district of the Napa Valley since prior to Prohibition. Over the past three decades, the winery has taken a leadership role in the development of California Pinot Noir through its research on clonal selections of the varietal, in conjuction with the University of California-Davis. Based on their research, they identified low-yeilding clones on the hillside vineyards surrounding the winery as producing highly concentrated grapes. These grapes form the backbone of their 1999 Signature Reserve Pinot Noir.
