Winemaker Notes

A tarot reading for our Merlot would certainly reveal the Empress Card, the Star Card & the Sun Card because our Merlot speaks of beauty, nature, abundance, serenity & vitality. You’ll experience an epiphany of cherry, plum & spice with hints of dark chocolate. Plush tannins & exceptional balance allow this wine to commune beautifully with a wide range of nature’s culinary bounty.

People sometimes ask me, "Do you like Merlot?" Such a difficult question—the wines can range from very simple to the most sublime wine in the world. How do I satisfy such a common question? I consider the source and context in which the inquiry is made, and I know how I should reply. I always begin by saying, "If the wine is good, then I will like it for what it represents. The 2015 Ca'Momi Merlot is made for the everyday marketplace. Not designed to be special, this wine is made for folks looking for a predictable, easy-drinking red, and that describes this wine—a simple red wine that does not require a certificate of wine appreciation. Ripe, smooth, and soft, this well-made wine is perfect as a cocktail or with light snacks, and yes I would enjoy a glass of this Merlot. (Tasted: June 16, 2017, San Francisco, CA USA)

Ca'Momi is the heart's offering of Italians Dario De Conti, Valentina Guolo-Migotto and Stefano Migotto. Their work is a tribute to the land of their birth and the food and wines that they love. From the winery and vineyards in Carneros, and featuring hand-selected fruit from across the Napa Valley, Ca'Momi Wines represent the best of both worlds: Napa Valley fruit carefully crafted by the heritage and obsessive care of Old World winemaking into some of the finest wines available.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
