Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A beautiful bouquet of cranberry, boysenberry, redwood bark, and a hint of red licorice waft from this 2014 Pinot Noir. Then an enchantingly juicy, mouthwatering palate of perfumey raspberry, red cherry and cassis roll smoothly into a perky sweet-tart, persistent, rose petal finish.

Readers looking for a classic, incredibly well made Pinot Noir to buy by the case should look no further than Josh's 2014 Pinot Noir from the Central Coast AVA. Supple, sexy, seamless and elegant, with classic Calera notes of raspberries, mulled cherries, spice and dried soil, it has no hard edges, a core of sweet fruit and a beautiful finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. I'm sure it will keep for 4-5 years (probably longer), but there's no need to delay gratification. Don't miss this fabulous effort and bravo to the Calera team for delivering this level of quality at the price.

Josh Jensen's relatively humble Central Coast bottling is particularly good in 2014. The fruit comes mostly from Monterey and Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, including blue-chip vineyards like Bien Nacido in Santa Maria Valley and Doctor’s in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Its plump, sunny texture and green edges cohere into a leafy red strawberry flavor that’s appetizing and refreshing, cool and warm at once.

I have often been asked by family and friends, "Are there any good Pinot Noirs that are affordable?" I usually grimace with this question. The easy answer is "no!" There are always some; they are just hard to find. Calera's Central Coast often comes up as one of the marketplace's top choices. The 2014 vintage is one the winery's best to date. Ready to drink, it exhibits soft berries, a smooth palate, and plenty of fruit in the finish. Drinks well now and a beautiful choice with lighter meat entrées. Calera, California
Calera Winery Video

In 1975, legendary vintner and American wine pioneer Josh Jensen founded Calera (Spanish for “lime kiln”) high in the remote Gavilan Mountains of California’s windswept Central Coast. There, in Mt. Harlan’s low-yielding, limestone-rich soils and cool, arid climate, he began planting what would ultimately become six small estate vineyards. Today, these vineyards are recognized as some of the New World’s most revered Pinot Noir sites.

Calera is a vision, and Calera’s wines truly express the sense of place. Rather than follow the recommended path, Josh Jensen became a pioneer in American Pinot Noir. Taking his cue from the great domaines of Burgundy, which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, he set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world but in the style of the greatest wines of France. Site selection was vital as he ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gavilan Mountains of California's Central Coast.

Under the stewardship of Winemaker Mike Waller, each vineyard is renowned for producing singular wines of uncommon purity, elegance and aging potential. In addition to its beloved single-vineyard wines, Calera partners with some of the top vineyards on California’s majestic Central Coast to make Calera’s beautiful Central Coast wines, including a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
