Winemaker Notes

The Rivadeniera family has always enjoyed drinking quality rosés at home. Recently, the winemakers have created their own magical rosé made from Malbec and Petit Verdot.

The 2017 Calcu Rosé presents a pale pink color with some violet hints. The nose reveals a very expressive wine with tropical fruit notes like mango and also a delicate oral background. On the palate, it is fresh and juicy, with a great balance between power and elegance. The finish is very clean and persistent

It is a versatile wine that pairs equally well with goat cheese, seafood, grilled chicken and delicately seasoned Asian dishes. Rosés are best enjoyed young, and South American Rosés are the freshest on the market.

In the local Mapuche language, Calcu means "healing doctor" or "magician." And indeed, winemakers Rodrigo Romero and Ricardo Rivadeniera have created a magical "Super Chilean" blend that expresses the diversity of the Colchagua Valley.

Like the bull on label, Calcu is exuberant and unrestrained. Rather than being tied to a particular terroir, Calcu is made with grapes harvested from throughout the Colchagua Valley, revealing different aspects of the valley’s dynamic character with every vintage.

Well-regarded for intense and exceptionally high quality red wines, the Colchagua Valley is situated in the southern part of Chile’s Rapel Valley, with many of the best vineyards lying in the foothills of the Coastal Range.

Heavy French investment and cutting-edge technology in both the vineyard and the winery has been a boon to the local viticultural industry, which already laid claim to ancient vines and a textbook Mediterranean climate.

The warm, dry growing season in the Colchagua Valley favors robust reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Syrah—in fact, some of Chile’s very best are made here. A small amount of good white wine is produced from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. It is produced throughout the world from a vast array of grape varieties, but the most successful sources are California, southern France (particularly Provence), and parts of Spain and Italy.

Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color will depend on the grape variety and the winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta. These wines are typically fresh and fruity, fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve the primary aromas and flavors. Most rosé, with a few notable exceptions, should be drunk rather young, within a few years of the vintage.
