Winemaker Notes

A deeply pitched nose of red and blue fruit aromas that include hints of warm earth, floral notes and stone that are also expressed by the rich, full and powerful flavors that seem built on a base of minerality that runs the length of the wine and culminates in a serious, austere and slightly dry finish.

"Exquisite fruit and spice on the nose. Gorgeous balance between body and elegance. Rich and complex, the "Caillerets" ranks among the top premiers crus in Volnay. Very good aging potential."

Wine Spectator
Pure and focused, with raspberry, floral and mineral flavors buoyed by a vibrant structure. Elegant and graceful, with intensity and excellent length. Best from 2011 through 2021.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2006 Volnay Caillerets Ancien Cuvee Carnot – from a parcel whose 1775 acquisition marked the inauguration of Bouchard – was also the picking that kicked off this vintage. It boasts the sweetest expression of ripe black fruits in any of the year's Cote de Beaune collection at this address, with scents of blackberry and violet segueing into a polished palate with refined tannins, sappy, sweet fruit intensity, and underlying chalkiness to live up to its site's name. A fine sense of animated interchange of fruit, mineral, and inner-mouth floral elements leads to a finish of lift and impressive length.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Winery Video

Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest wine merchants and one of the largest landowners in the Côte d’Or. Over the centuries, the House has been devoted to attaining highly renowned parcels to produce exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With uncompromising quality standards, long term grower partnerships and ageing in a state-of-the-art winery results in wines of outstanding consistency and the truest and finest expression of each terroir.

Bouchard Père & Fils joined the Henriot family portfolio in 1995.

Over time, by acquiring various terroirs with great care and patience, Bouchard Père & Fils has built up a vast domaine in Côte-d’Or. Today the estate boasts 130 hectares of vines, of which 12 are classed Grand Cru and 74 classed as Premier Cru.

Bouchard Père & Fils is an example of unique Burgundy heritage, offering great diversity and a raft of prestigious appellations: Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Beaune Grèves Vignes de l’Enfant Jésus, Bonnes-Mares, Meursault Perrières… names that resonate with history, inspiring respect and encouraging the pursuit of excellence, with 4 monopolies and exclusives among them. These remarkable parcels are meticulously tended by our teams who are responsible for the maintenance of the estate’s vines.

Celebrated as some of the best wine in the universe, red wine from Burgundy, otherwise known as red Burgundy, is Pinot noir. In fact Burgundy is the birthplace of Pinot noir and the source of the planet’s most sensual, delicate, valuable and sought-after Pinot noir wines.

Understanding and enjoying red Burgundy can stay simple, with a basic knowledge of its subregions, become more intricate by dialing down to the villages and vineyards or become a life-long passion, exploring climats (plots of vines), vintages and the post French Revolution land ownership laws. In any case, a fine red Burgundy will display refined nuances of black currant, red fruit, earth, spice, alluring floral aromatics and have great elegance, complexity and longevity.

Most famous, praised and collected of Burgunday are those from the Côte d'Or. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the area now called Côte d'Or was under a warm ocean whose sea floor has, over time, shifted and decomposed into various layers of limestone, sandstone and clay interspersed with ancient fossilized sea creatures. This is what is referred to as the famous escarpment upon which all of the highly sought-after Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vineyards can be found. In other words, from north to south, the best vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux, Nuits-St-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard and Volnay follow the path of this ancient sea bed.
