Winemaker Notes

92 Burghound

"Good deep red-ruby. Expansive, complex aromas of flowers, licorice, graphite, tobacco and sexy oak spices. Sweet, sappy and lush, with captivating energy to the fruit-driven flavors of dark cherry and raspberry. Finishes with suave but very firm tannins and a slightly medicinal note of licorice. Prost intentionally showed this at the very end of the line-up of 2006s to make the point that this big boy could stand up to Bouchard's top examples from the Cote de Nuits..."

With the 2006 Beaune Greves L'Enfant Jesus – which, as usual Bouchard presents at the close of a tasting, after their grand crus – they certainly make a case for the superiority of these vines, if not for the enormous price differential vis-a-vis the other Beaune premier crus at this address. Seven parcels were tapped for this, and around 20% of the juice or young wine was declassified into the Beaune du Chateau. Imagine roasted, still bloody lamb seasoned with pungent herbs and accompanied by a tart compote of black fruits and you have the overall impression of this deeply rich cru with its persistent layering of flavors. I would expect it to reward 6-8 years of attention.

Shows nice bright cherry and strawberry flavors, with good flesh and firm tannins. There's finesse and balance, as the finish ends on a sweet fruit note. Best from 2011 through 2020.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Winery Video

Established in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest and most diverse Estate in Burgundy with approximately 130 ha (320 acres) of vineyards, the majority of which are Premiers and Grands Crus. Highly sought after, their wines benefit from optimal ageing conditions in the underground cellars of the Château de Beaune, the former 15th century royal fortress that the Domaine has occupied since 1820. Bouchard Père & Fils doesn't make wines; they bring them into existence. Cultivation and vinification, on a plot-by-plot basis, are a form of craftmanship that they pride themselves on which has led to the utmost respect for their terroirs. Bouchard Père & Fils obtained the highest level of sustainable agricultural certification (HVE3) in 2015, being the first in the Côte d'Or to do so.

Celebrated as some of the best wine in the universe, red wine from Burgundy, otherwise known as red Burgundy, is Pinot noir. In fact Burgundy is the birthplace of Pinot noir and the source of the planet’s most sensual, delicate, valuable and sought-after Pinot noir wines.

Understanding and enjoying red Burgundy can stay simple, with a basic knowledge of its subregions, become more intricate by dialing down to the villages and vineyards or become a life-long passion, exploring climats (plots of vines), vintages and the post French Revolution land ownership laws. In any case, a fine red Burgundy will display refined nuances of black currant, red fruit, earth, spice, alluring floral aromatics and have great elegance, complexity and longevity.

Most famous, praised and collected of Burgunday are those from the Côte d'Or. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the area now called Côte d'Or was under a warm ocean whose sea floor has, over time, shifted and decomposed into various layers of limestone, sandstone and clay interspersed with ancient fossilized sea creatures. This is what is referred to as the famous escarpment upon which all of the highly sought-after Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vineyards can be found. In other words, from north to south, the best vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux, Nuits-St-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard and Volnay follow the path of this ancient sea bed.
