Unlike his colleagues in Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, de la Moriniere did not have any frost or hail damage (and only traces of oidium) in 1998. However, the famed Corton hill, on which is located Corton-Charlemagne, was not spared nature's wrath. The searing sun and heat of August burnt a significant percentage of the grapes, so de la Moriniere was compelled 'to sort like crazy.'
Thus, the area devoted exclusively to the development of two Grand Crus: the Corton-Charlemagne, Which is its flagship wine and the Corton.
Its production, resulting from old vines planting carefully selected and controlled performance is the result of work whose quality is recognized by leading critics and connoisseurs. The care and attention that is paid to both the vineyard and the cellar have earned a global reputation and presence on the largest tables.
The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
