Winemaker Notes

Very intense and complex, with soft fruity notes of black cherry and cherry, together with intense and pleasant spicy scents, particularly of tobacco, cocoa and black pepper mingled with agreable balsamic and mineral notes.

WS 93
Wine Spectator
Savory, featuring tobacco, earth, wild herb and underbrush notes enveloping a core of fading cherry. Balanced and finishing dry, with tobacco and iron accents. Drink now through 2023.
RP 92
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A pure expression of Sangiovese, the 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Capannino offers dark color concentration with plump fruit that is enriched by spicy oak. Skin maceration is extended over 25 days and the wine is aged in both large and medium oak for two years. The bouquet offers dark fruit layers with plenty of cinnamon, spice and clove. The results are bulky and meaty. This wine needs a few more years to reach better integration, but it should evolve and flesh out nicely over the next ten years.

Bibbiano is located in the historic Chianti region, in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti, overlooking the Elsa Valley towards the castle of Monteriggioni. Cultivation of grapes in this area originated with the Etruscans, continuing well into the late-Latin era. Inspired by this incomparable natural and human heritage, our family, owner of Bibbiano since 1865, continues to lovingly cultivate the vineyards and olive groves following a vibrant and modern family business tradition. Today’s owners, Tommaso and Federico Marrocchesi Marzi, are the fifth generation. Surrounded by vast olive groves consisting of over three thousand trees, Bibbiano vineyards cover an overall area of about 25 hectares, at an altitude between 270 and 300 meters, distributed on the hillsides, with enviable exposure and excellent microclimate.

One of the first wine regions anywhere to be officially recognized and delimited, Chianti Classico is today what was originally defined simply as Chianti. Already identified by the early 18th century as a superior zone, the official name of Chianti was proclaimed upon the area surrounding the townships of Castellina, Radda and Gaiole, just north of Siena, by Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany in an official decree in 1716.

However, by the 1930s the Italian government had appended this historic zone with additonal land in order to capitalize on the Chianti name. It wasn’t until 1996 that Chianti Classico became autonomous once again when the government granted a separate DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) to its borders. Ever since, Chianti Classico considers itself no longer a subzone of Chianti.

Many Classicos are today made of 100% Sangiovese but can include up to 20% of other approved varieties grown within the Classico borders. The best Classicos will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and be full-bodied with plenty of ripe fruit (plums, black cherry, blackberry). Also common among the best Classicos are expressive notes of cedar, dried herbs, fennel, balsamic or tobacco.
