Winemaker Notes

Barrymore by Carmel Road Pinot Grigio is bright and crisp. Flavors of lemon drop, Asian pear and honeydew melon star alongside the "wet stone" minerality that’s a hallmark of the Monterey region’s rocky vineyards. Pinot Grigio pairs with a multitude of food. A terrific match for all kinds of dishes, from gnocchi in brown butter with fried sage to a Caprese salad, Pinot Grigio is a great wine for the dinner table, as well as for enjoying pre-dinner with friends and family.

As an experienced wine taster of four decades, I have yet to figure out where to place California Pinot Grigio? In comparing this grape to others in California, it seems to most similar to Chardonnay without the fatness. The 2015 Barrymore by Carmel Road Pinot Grigio is a charming and entertaining wine. The wine's ripe apple and candied melon flavors lend itself to light appetizers on warm summer evenings on the deck. Drinks well now. (Tasted: September 13, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Wine is all about the journey. Any wine lover would have to agree. The discovery of new wines, new regions and new vintages is what keeps wine exciting to novices and enthusiasts alike.

For Drew Barrymore, it was the journey that propelled her to delve into the world of wine and with an eponymously named Pinot Grigio. A fan of crisp, fruity white wines, Barrymore has created a wine that reflects her style and personality: fresh, dynamic and fun.

A geographic and climatic paradise for grape vines, Monterey is a part of the greater Central Coast AVA and contains within it five smaller sub-appellations, including Arroyo Seco, San Lucas, San Bernabe, Hames Valley and the famous Santa Lucia Highlands. The climate is relatively warm but tempered by cool, coastal winds, allowing the regions in Monterey County an exceptionally long growing season. Bud break often happens two weeks sooner and harvest tends to be two weeks later compared to other surrounding regions.

Monterey’s coastal side, where the cooling ocean fog allows grapes to develop a perfect sugar-acid balance, excels in the production of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Warmer, inland subzones are home to fleshy, concentrated and full-bodied reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel.

Chardonnay, covering about 40% of vineyard acreage, is the most widely planted grape in all of Monterey County.

This “white” variety is actually born out of a mutation of Pinot Noir and shows a unique rosy, purplish hue upon full ripeness. The grape boasts two versions of its name and two generally distinct styles: the crisp, Italian Pinot Grigio and the softer French Pinot Gris. Somm Secret—Given the color of its berries and aromatic potential, Pinot Grigio is commonly used to make "orange wines." An orange wine is a white wine made with fermentation on its skins (similar to red wine making), leading to n orange hued wine with ephemeral aromas and extra complexity.
