Winemaker Notes

Isabelle is unlike any other Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir. Our top Pinot Noirs prior to making Isabelle in 1994 were all single vineyard wines. Isabelle was the first top end Pinot Noir that was a blend from different locations. After the birth of his daughter in 1995, Jim Clendenen wanted to make a special wine in her honor. Isabelle has developed into a unique young woman and her wine is unique for Au Bon Climat, a blended, high-end Pinot Noir.

Dark, rich, and layered, this regal wine is remarkable now but will be even more integrated and complex in time.

Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2014 Pinot Noir Isabelle has fragrant notes of cranberries, red cherries and rose hip on the nose, with touches of dried herbs, underbrush and raspberry leaves. Medium-bodied, elegantly fruited and with fine tannins, plus bags of freshness, it has delicate red berry and earth flavors and good length.

The 2014 Pinot Noir Isabelle comes from the Bien Nacido and le Bon Climat Vineyards and was barrel fermented and aged in new French oak. It’s a beautiful, silky and seamless effort offering classic raspberry, spice, dried flowers and hints of cedar in an ethereally textured package. With good acidity, impeccable balance and a great finish, drink it over the coming 8-10 years.

Shows formidable structure and length to the vibrant cherry, plum and dried raspberry flavors. Lively acidity lingers on the rich, spicy finish. Drink now through 2022.

Showing plenty of personality, the complex 2014 Au Bon Climat Isabelle Pinot Noir brings bright red fruit, intriguing earthly delights, and ripe tannins to the fore. The wine's richness pairs it well with a savory Irish stew. (Tasted: November 17, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

In 1982, Clendenen decided, along with Adam Tolmach, to start a winery dedicated to Burgundian varietals in leased quarters. Adam left in 1990 to pursue his own efforts leaving Jim solo at the helm. Through careful re-investment from its own production, Au Bon Climat (which means "a well exposed vineyard") has grown to over 50,000 cases annually.

Au Bon Climat sources fruit from several of the most highly regarded vineyards in the Central Coast. These include Clendenen’s own Le Bon Climat Vineyard and estate plantings at the legendary Bien Nacido Vineyard – both in Santa Maria Valley, along with Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills, Los Alamos Vineyard (Santa Barbara County), and San Luis Obispo County's Talley Vineyard.

The winery has cultivated an international reputation for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Jim Clendenen, the “Mind Behind” Au Bon Climat, is recognized worldwide for his classically styled wines. In addition to his Burgundian-focused Au Bon Climat wines, Jim also established another brand, Clendenen Family Vineyards. This project of passion allows him to make artisan, small lots of distinctive wines from a wider spectrum of varieties in styles conducive to small lots. He has received high acclaim for Italian varietals particularly his Nebbiolo that has a five year aging regimen in barrel.
