Winemaker Notes

A striking bouquet of intricate tropical flavors and the stunning floral aromatics of the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc produce a uniquely decadent expression of the varietal. Our custom barrel-fermentation, adapted from my experience at Haut Brion in Bordeaux, creates a distinct richness on the palate that is balanced by the varietal’s quintessential bright, natural acidity.

Inspired by the dry, white Bordeaux wines, there’s just 2% barrel-fermented semillon here, offering a rich array of deep-set, tropical-fruit flavors and the oak is nicely integrated. The yields are lower, the fruit is ripe and the depth of flavor is a real highlight. Deep, citrus and tropical-fruit flavors with seriously silky textural appeal. Drink or hold.

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc comes (there’s 4% Semillon in the blend) from the cooler Bennett Valley and was brought up in 20% new French oak, with the balance in stainless steel and used barrels. Its vibrant gold color is followed by a reductive nose that improves with time in the glass, showing more sweet lime, pineapple, and crushed rock aromas and flavors. It's beautiful on the palate, with a layered, opulent texture, good acidity, and a great finish. It's going to benefit from 6-12 months of bottle age and keep for 3-4 years.

Shows off some toasted coconut and spice notes up front, complementing the lemon meringue, marmalade and orange zest flavors. The richness is balanced by fresh acidity. Drink now.

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Dry Stack Vineyard, containing 2% Sémillon, was barrel fermented and aged six months in about one-third new oak. It opens with notions of gunflint and candle smoke, segueing to kiwi tart, peach, dried white flowers and a racy crushed-stone vein. It’s rounded and textural in the mouth, with a medium to full body, intense, savory-laced tropical fruits refreshed by juicy acidity and a long, savory finish. This is a ripe, rounded style anchored by freshness and minerality.
