Winemaker Notes

Dark purple core with a fuchsia rim. Very dense aromas of plum, graphite, blackberry, white pepper and lighter floral hints. Very full bodied on the palate with well balanced acid and big ripe tannins. Sweet and full with great stone and nickel minerality. Sweet blackberry and vanilla with long lingering roasted cocoa beans in the finish.

Critical Acclaim

ST 92
International Wine Cellar

Deep, bright ruby. Exotic aromas of fresh raspberries and cherry-cola. An expansive, sweet fruit bomb with intense raspberry and blackberry flavors enlivened by juicy acidity; this doesn't come off as jammy. Finishes bright, sweet and long, with an echoing raspberry note.

Alto Moncayo, , Spain
Alto Moncayo
Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a joint venture of Jorge Ordonez, Bodegas Borsao and others, in conjunction with Chris Ringland. It is located in the town of Bulbuente (Zaragoza) Spain and the Denominacion Campo de Borja. 62 hectares (153.2 acres) of old clone Garnacha vines are planted ont he hillside vineyards oriented to the southwest. With vineyards located in three villages, a few of the vineyards are terraced. The winery possesses very unique soils of red clay (indicative of being rich in iron) mixed with red slate. Because of its hillside location the soils are very poor in organic matter and shallow. A few sites have calcareous soil. Nighttime during the summer brings cool temperatures to moderate the growing season and there is scant rainfall. The youngest vines of Alto Moncayo are 35 years old and the oldest vineyards are over 90 years old. Their focus is exlusively on Garnacha.

Known for elegant wines that combine power and finesse, Carneros is set in the rolling hills that straddle the southernmost parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties. Its close proximity to the San Francisco Peninsula and the San Pablo Bay is instrumental in controlling the climate of the area. The winds from the San Pablo Bay create a cooling effect ideal for producing wines with crisp acidity and balanced flavors.

This cooler pocket of California lends itself to growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and more recently, Old-World style Syrah. While more delicate than most wines from neighboring regions, these are firmly structured, complex, and full of flavor. Carneros is also an important source of sparkling wines made in the style of Champagne.
