Winemaker Notes

Created by Juan Pablo Michelini, this white is a 70% Chardonnay, 20% Chenin and 10% Sauvignon Blanc blend born in vineyards located in Gualtallary, Uco Valley. The three varieties are co-fermented with native yeasts in concrete eggs. After that, the wine is biologically aged in 500-liter French oak barrels (50% first-usage and 50% second-use barrels) for a year.

James Suckling
A straw-colored white with aromas of dried citrus, toasted almond, pineapple, dried apricot and herbs. It’s medium-to full-bodied with bright acidity. Fantastic texture and concentration here, with a waxy, saline and pithy finish. Peaches at the end. Wild blend. 70% chardonnay, 20% chenin blanc and 10% sauvignon blanc.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The complex white 2019 Edad Media Blanco was produced with a blend of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, while the previous vintage had less Chardonnay and some 30% Chenin Blanc. It fermented in bin and concrete egg, and the wine matured in barrel and developed some flor because the barrels were never topped up. So, it combines some oxidative and spicy notes, a little biological, and it has a sharp palate, dry and almost salty, not about the varieties at all. Impressive.

Vinous
The 2019 Blanco Edad Media is a blend of 85% Chardonnay and 25% Sauvignon Blanc from Gualtallary, Uco Valley, aged for 12 months. Yellow with a golden sheen. The nose is woody with notes of hazelnut, vanilla, white fruit, caramel, linden blossom and creamed corn. Light but tacky in the mouth with a watery flow and good malic freshness that keeps things compact. Saline and long-lasting, this is a modern wine, classically aged.

Uco Valley Wine

Mendoza, Argentina

With a winning combination of cool weather, high elevation and well-draining alluvial soils, it is no surprise that Mendoza’s Uco Valley is one of the most exciting up-and-coming wine regions in Argentina. Healthy, easy-to-manage vines produce low yields of high-quality fruit, which in turn create flavorful, full-bodied wines with generous acidity.

This is the source of some of the best Malbec in Mendoza, which can range from value-priced to ultra-premium. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay also perform well here.

With hundreds of white grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended white wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used in white wine blends, but in the New World, experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to enhance balance or create complexity, lending different layers of flavors and aromas. For example, a variety that creates a soft and full-bodied white wine blend, like Chardonnay, would do well combined with one that is more fragrant and naturally high in acidity. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.
