Winemaker Notes

Deep, dark, black oil with touches of mauve on the rim. Beautiful nose of spices and flowers, such as thyme and lilacs with a touch of roses, dark chocolate cherries and gingerbread. On the palate, fresh, fruity entrance evolving on granular integrated tannins lingering on juicy fruit such as black currant, plum and boysenberries.

Critical Acclaim

JS 94
James Suckling

Blackcurrants and blueberries with hints of flowers and chocolate. Full body and a round, juicy mouthfeel. Flavorful finish. Needs a year or two to come together. A Bordeaux blend. Better after 2022.

WE 93
Wine Enthusiast

This blends 73% Cabernet Sauvignon with 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Together, they find harmony in grippy black fruit, viscous thick tannin and pronounced oak. Leather, sage and peppercorn round out the savory elements of intrigue and flavor.

RP 92
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Composed of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Proprietary Red Wine features decadent warm plums, black cherries and blackcurrants notes with nuances of sautéed herbs, tilled soil and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied with a nice firm, grainy texture and just enough freshness, it has an appealing earthy restraint in the mouth with herbal sparks on the long savory finish. 1,750 cases produced.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
