Winemaker Notes

Medium ruby color, with the delicate aroma of rose petals on the nose, ripe strawberry, cranberry, and cherry fruits on the palate. Elegant and juicy, with a good backbone of acidity and a long finish.

COMMENTARY: Some Pinot Noirs talk to you and invite you to take another sip. The superb 2016 Alfaro Lester Family Vineyard Pinot Noir is such a wine. TASTING NOTES: This wine speaks volumes. Its aromas and flavors of zingy strawberries and chalk are enticing and endless. Pair its outstanding flavors with wild game. (Tasted: August 20, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

The 2016 Pinot Noir Lester Family Vineyards was my favorite of these recent releases from Richard Alfaro, offering up a lovely nose of crushed currants, cherries, sweet spices, forest floor, citrus rind and currant leaf. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, textural and velvety, with a generous, gourmand personality but plenty of acidity and sapid complexity, concluding with a beautifully delineated, mouthwatering finish. There are six barrels of this superb Pinot Noir.

A rugged and topographically diverse cool-climate appellation with a rich history, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA stretches from Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, to the northern border of Monterey County. Elevations range from 800 feet to upwards of 3,000 and microclimates vary substantially depending on which side of the mountains the vineyards lie; cool ocean winds and fog play an important role here. This can be a challenging region in which to grow grapes, but it is well worth the effort. Santa Cruz Mountains wines are noted for balanced acidity levels, often showing great aging potential. Wine has been made here since the 1800s, most notably from the legendary Ridge Vineyards, whose Monte Bello vineyard garners international admiration.

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the stars of this region, while Merlot and Zinfandel also perform quite well. Organic and sustainable vineyard practices are becoming increasingly common.
