Winemaker Notes

"From 70-year-old vines on the estate, the former Norman's vineyard, comes this rich, ripe and massive Grenache, redolent of all sorts of dark fruits—plums, blueberries, blackberries—that cascade over the palate like a roaring waterfall. Still, there's enough texture and grace to make it possible to warm up to this thoroughbred, and the finish sails on forever. Best from 2006 through 2012."
-Wine Spectator

McLaren Vale is a bounteous basin washed by the pristine Gulf St. Vincent. Ten miles from these waters lies a hillock of 60 million-year-old sands, nicknamed "The Beach." It's actually the weathered remnant of a long-gone mountain range, revered for the earthy wholesomeness it feeds our dry-farmed 60 year-old bush vines. The rosy polished sheen of this Grenache, its blackberry and spicebox bouquet and long, intense finish, perfectly show what these ancient sands produce. Yangarra, by the way, is Aboriginal for "from the earth." And Vincent is the patron Saint of vineyards. Coincidence?

Yangarra Estate Vineyard Winery Video

Yangarra Estate Vineyard is a biodynamic wine farm located in the Blewitt Springs district of McLaren Vale, South Australia. The estate was first planted in 1946 and is home to 87 hectares of vines, led by Grenache and Shiraz. Located a 40-minute drive south of Adelaide, the McLaren Vale winegrowing region has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers with cool, wet winters.

Peter Fraser has been the winemaker and driving force behind Yangarra Estate Vineyard since 2000. Peter focuses much of his attention on the vineyards. When it comes to winemaking philosophy, Peter stands by some key foundations of sensitivity and attention-to-detail. Peter was named ‘Winemaker of the Year’ by James Halliday’s Wine Companion Awards. In 2018, he was nominated as Best Winemaker by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
