Winemaker Notes

The 2016 Charles Wetmore Cabernet Sauvignon is a great representation of a Livermore Valley Cabernet, bringing forth dark berry notes such as blackberry, complemented by pink peppercorn and a layer of cocoa dust. This wine has a velvety acidity and would be great to drink immediately or store in your cellar.

Pairs well with brie cheese, lamb and meat stuffed tortellini.

Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Sirah, 8% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec

As California’s first agricultural commissioner, Wetmore planted vine cuttings from many of Bordeaux’s well-known châteaux in Livermore Valley in the 1880s. Those vines continue to produce today in the valley’s gravelly loam soils on the Wente family’s certified-sustainable estate. This single-vineyard wine, named for the pioneer who brought a piece of Margaux to Livermore, is co-fermented with Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, and Malbec in stainless steel and aged for 18 months in 40% new and 60% second- and third-use French barrels. The nose is greeted by big notes of dark chocolate and black fruit. Full-bodied, the fruit generously washes across the palate in waves of blackberry cream and violets. On the broad-shouldered palate with silky tannins, cassis and cocoa persist, and a fine acidity keeps it fresh-tasting.

Wente Vineyards, California
Wente Vineyards Family Owned and Certified Sustainable Winery Video

Founded in 1883, Wente Vineyards is the country’s longest continuously family-owned and operated winery. Today, the winery maintains its leadership role in California winegrowing under the ownership and management of the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family. Blending traditional and innovative winemaking practices, the winery draws from its sustainably-farmed vineyards to create an outstanding portfolio of wines. The family owns and operates vineyards in two world-class regions of the Central Coast of California - Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco, Monterey. Located just east of San Francisco in the historic Livermore Valley, Wente Vineyards is recognized as one of California’s premier wine country destinations, featuring wine tasting, food and wine experiences, and championship golf.

In 1912, 2nd Generation Ernest Wente persuaded his father and founder, C.H. Wente, to import Chardonnay cuttings from a well-known vine nursery, F. Richter Nursery in Montpellier, France, to the Livermore Valley. Ernest hand-picked vines that showed the best health and pronounced flavors, grafted the two together and propagated those characteristics forward. Ultimately creating what is known as the ‘Wente Clone.’ Today, over 75% of all California Chardonnay stems from the Wente Clone and the Wente Family property.
