The 2018 Graciano, the first wine they produced at the new Viña Zorzal in 2007, was produced with grapes from the village of Corella, and they want to show the expression of the grape in the village, more Mediterranean than Fitero, where they have a significant percentage of their vines. The spicy character of the wine and the lively palate are the expression of the Graciano in their village, what they have been trying to express since 2015. It fermented in stainless steel with moderate extraction and matured in used French oak barrels of different sizes for nine months. This is a very fresh vintage, and the wine is harmonious, spicy, with an herbal hint, with some dusty tannins, chalky and a bitter twist in the finish. I think the earlier harvest of the grape delivers wines that are more transparent, and this is quite stony and tasty. This is a very good value and a great introduction to Graciano.

Vina Zorzal Vina Zorzal Vineyard Winery Image

Viña Zorzal is located in the Southern part of the Navarra DO, very close to the border of Rioja. The larger parent house of Vinícola Corellana was founded by Antonio Sanz in 1989. The guiding principles here have always been sustainability and a return to historical grape varieties. With the coming of age of Antonios' three sons, Xabier, Iñaki and Mikel, the winery Viña Zorzal was born. Like so many father/son stories, the children have adopted the idea of the father and taken it further. The farming is now organic and the focus is on making higher quality, site specific wines that respect history but also look to a brighter future.

Graciano has been best known as a blending grape used in Rioja to add color, depth and perfume to Tempranillo. It also thrives in the nearby region of Navarra and a few dedicated winemakers in California and Australia are making singe varietal bottlings certainly worthy of checking out! Graciano’s black fruit and lush tannins make it a perfect pairing to grilled or smoked red meat, as well as game.

Just north of Spain’s famous Rioja region, Navarra excels in the production of full and fruit-dominant reds and good quality, dry rosés. Garnacha holds most of the land under vine, with Tempranillo coming in second place.
