    Villiera, South Africa
The winemaking tradition of the Grier family began in the 1970's with cousins Jeff and Simon Grier qualifying as oenologist and viticulturist respectively. Their pursuit of winemaking excellence found a home in 1983 with the purchase of the Villiera vineyards in the Paarl Region. A short while later Cathy Grier (now Brewer) joined the family business to head up the sales team. At Villiera the underlying philosophy is to ensure that the wines reflect the specific character of the terroir, as well as the unique characteristics of each vintage. In addition, techniques are utilised in the cellar that develop and retain the distinct varietal aromas and flavours. Extensive replanting of classic and local varietals, coupled with the introduction of modern cellar facilities for both still wine and Mèthode Cap Classique production, has layed firm foundations for the outstanding wines produced by this dedicated family team.

Gewürztraminer, an expressive and aromatically distinctive white grape variety, is considered a noble variety in the Alsace region of France, and produces wonderful wines in the mountainous Alto Adige region of NE Italy. Generally this grape grows well in cooler regions and its natural intensity makes it a great ally for flavorful cuisine such as Indian, Middle Eastern or Moroccan. Somm Secret—Because of a charming perfume and tendency towards slight sweetness, Gewürztraminer makes for an excellent gateway wine for those who love sweet wines but want to venture into the realm of drier whites.

South Africa’s most famous wine-producing district, Stellenbosch, surrounds the historic town with the same name; fine winemaking here dates back to the late 1600s. Its valleys of granite, sandstone and alluvial loam soils between the towering blue-grey mountains of Stellenbosch, Simonsberg and Helderberg have the capacity to produce beautiful wines from many varieties. The climate is warm Mediterranean, tempered by the cool Atlantic air of nearby False Bay.

Perhaps most well-known for its Pinotage and Bordeaux blends, Stellenbosch also produces noteworthy wines from Syrah, Chenin blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. The district’s wards—Banghoek, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Polkadraai Hills and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch—all produce distinctive wines from vines with relatively low yields.
