The freshest, zippiest style of Red. Fresh A.F. is a succulent, juicy, aromatic and supremely refreshing wine. Super-juice mouth-feel and texture that picks up on the most conflicted of characters without a heady aroma or heavy weight holding it down. A more zippy expression of the grape variety – no doubt from the meter’s worth of iron-rich sand on limestone that emphasize these more fragrant and fleeting characters.

Laura and Brendan Carter produce a range of nero d’Avola wines, working with fruit from Clare Valley, from the Adelaide Hills and from Barmera in Riverland. We only tasted the Fresh AF, the lightest of their neros, blended with old-vine zibibbo that grows along with it in Riverland—that kick of zibibbo makes it, as one taster said, “a white-wine lover’s red wine.” Well, it’s a wine for this red-wine lover, too, as I couldn’t resist the tart plum and cracked black pepper scents that poured out of this glass, surprisingly bold given the wine’s light lavender color. Given its red-fruit length, this may be one of the best Riverland wines I’ve tasted. Built to drink now, especially if you’re serving Sicilian snacks, like fried-potato crocchè, pannele (chickpea fritters) or pizza secca.
A new venture in the Adelaide Hills by winemaking couple, Brendan and Laura Carter. Following their passions for Italian-inspired, textural and site-expressive wines, they seek to create Australian examples of Mediterranean varieties in an approachable and jovial fashion.
It's this passion that has driven them to start two wine labels, one that protects their farmers and another that protects their future. They have since taken these concepts and with their distillery, applewood - catapulted it into the horticultural realm - studying indigenous produce, it's beneficial effects on the land and the stories it can tell through incredible colors, flavors, and textures.
Boldly opulent and robust, Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s most widely planted red grape. Nero d’Avola performs well both as a single varietal bottling and in blends. It loves hot, arid climates and Sicily's old vines are aptly head-trained close to the ground, making them resistant to strong winds. A few pioneering producers in California as well as Australia farm Nero d’Avola in the same way. Somm Secret—Nero d’Avola's other name, Calabrese, suggests origins from the mainland region of Calabria.
Adelaide refers to the diverse super zone in South Australia containing the Mount Lofty Ranges Zone (Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Plains and Clare Valley), Fleurieu Zone (Currency Creek, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, and Southern Fleurieu) and Barossa Zone (Barossa Valley and Eden Valley).
The Adelaide Hills region is distinguished and beautiful, offering a cool respite in the summer for Adelaide city dwellers. With vineyards planted fairly high in elevation at 1,500 to 1,800 feet, it is known for particularly fine, citrus-driven Sauvignon Blanc.
The Adelaide Plains is a hot region northwest of the Adelaide Hills that produces approachable, value-driven wines.
