Winemaker Notes
Dark red and brooding on the nose this wine has a fruit quality so unlike the 2015 Lead Vocals which is grown just a few miles away! Floral and intensely fruity, there is also a savory quality that comes through from the high percentage of whole cluster fermentation. Cranberry, strawberry, tobacco, and pink peppercorn lead to a long warm finish.

Joshua Klapper takes the extremely cool-climate vines of Presqu'ile Vineyard and works refreshing magic, presenting a wine with complex aromas of plum, roasted cherry, dried sage, pine needle and peppercorn. The palate is bright with raspberry yet lifted by frankincense and sandalwood, proving delicate but immensely expressive.

They source fruit from some of the best vineyards in Santa Barbara County and across the Central Coast, but they don’t own any of those vineyards, so what differentiates their wines from others sourced from the same vineyard sites? There are many factors, from picking decisions to fermentation, oak, when to rack, when to bottle as well as intangible, indescribable elements. The concept is that those intangibles have a big impact and, collectively, they make up the Timbre of their wines.
As a terroir-driven winery, we strive to make wines that are expressive of the places and times from which they came, but inevitably, as winemakers, they are channeling these vineyard sites through their own experiences and adding their own mark, their Timbre, on the resulting wines.
Santa Maria Valley lies mainly in northern Santa Barbara County, with a small portion of it overlapping southern San Luis Obispo County. It is close to the Pacific, and runs east-west, which means warmer air in the eastern end draws cool air off the ocean in the west, and brings it through the valley. This effect, combined with abundant sunshine, lengthens the growing season. The longer growing season leads to long hang time, which promotes both ripeness and optimal acidity levels in grape berries. As early as the 1970’s, Santa Maria Valley was recognized as being a superior source of wine grapes, certainly including Chardonnay and Syrah. But arguably the top variety here is Pinot Noir.
Originally a domain primarily of growers, including the Miller Family of the justifiably famous Bien Nacido Vineyard, this AVA is now home to over 30 wineries. Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir consistently offers full flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberry, often accompanied by notes of spice, cola, vanilla and earth. They show impressive balance and elegance, as well as great versatility with food.
