    Winemaker Notes

This blend of local vineyards has produced a wine with strong regional and varietal definition. The wine has a lively deep purple hue with aromas and flavours of violet, blackberry and mulberry. Further complexity is built through 22 months of American oak maturation. The palate is full and soft in the front and middle, with flavours of small berry fruit complemented by the oak. The wine finishes with moderate oak and fruit-derived tannins. This elegant Clare Shiraz has power and finesse which makes it both approachable now and worthy of keeping for up to 10 years.

    Tim Adams Winery Image
The Tim Adams winery is located 130 kilometres north of Adelaide in the beautiful Clare Valley, South Australia. From 1985 when just 10 tonnes of grapes were vinified, the winery now crushes 500 tonnes - around 250 tonnes for the Tim Adams label, and contract winemaking for other local labels, the balance. This is now sourced from 11 local growers as well as from our own vineyards (joint venture with best friends Grant & Jackie Crawley). On our vineyard we grow Riesling, Semillon and Shiraz. Planned plantings for the next few years include Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Viogner, Pinot Grigio as well as increasing the plantings of Shiraz and Riesling.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
