Winemaker Notes

Rodgers Creek Vineyard is planted on an elevated ridge in the Petaluma Gap area of the Sonoma Coast AVA. Planted to a Rhone clone on volcanic rock, this sloping hillside vineyard offers arresting views of the Sonoma coast to the west and San Pablo Bay and even San Francisco to the south. This is cool climate grape-growing at its finest, with coastal winds and fog tempering the sunny California climate. The clonal selection is perfect for this microclimate, offering a unique combination of Old World aromatics and California fruit profile. We use whole clusters in the fermentation here, as is done in the Rhone Valley, to emphasize the specific character of this vineyard. The result is highly perfumed, aromatic and complex Syrah with loads of personality.

The 2009 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard boasts gorgeous inner perfume, partly from the inclusion of 30% whole clusters. Smoke, exotic spices, incense, tobacco and cured meats wrap around the cool, beautifully articulated finish. This is a Syrah of notable pedigree and pure class.

Skylark, California
Skylark Wine Company is a collaboration between Boulevard Restaurant Wine Directors John Lancaster and Robert Perkins. John and Robert have run the wine program at the acclaimed Boulevard Restaurant in San Francisco for the past twelve years. During their tenure at Boulevard, they have built a close friendship, an inventory of wines from around the globe and a palate of tasting wines of the world from vintage to vintage.

This partnership has created long-term relationships with the entire scope of the wine industry, with winemakers, vineyard managers and owners. With these relationships, their next logical progression was the realization of a dream: making fine wine from select vineyards. While the original plan was simply a barrel, they quickly jumped in with 14 barrels of Syrah from the 2002 Harvest. Skylark Wine Company was formed.

"We strive to produce wines that crystallize our passion within each bottle. Because of our relationships with meticulous and respected grape growers, we have been able to produce wines of distinction and character that represent the best of what Northern California vineyards have to offer. We are proud of Skylark and hope to continue share these wines with family and friends, old and new." Thank you for your support.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Sonoma County wines are produced with carefully selected grape varieties to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.
