Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

20 months in 75% new French Burgundy barrels. Compared tothe 2006, the 2007 has more concentration and fruit, but alsomore tannin and minerality. I'd say at this point in its evolutionthe 2006 was more open. The 2007 is going to take a little moretime to fully come around, but when it does, watch out, it hasenormous aging potential.

Blend: 71% Syrah, 18% Grenache, 11% Mourvedre

Professional Ratings

The 2007 Broken Stones is 71% Syrah, 18% Grenache and 11% Mourvèdre that also saw plenty of stems in the ferments. It too is incredibly elegant, with more plums, violets, incense and peppery aromatics. Full-bodied, silky and pure on the palate, with a killer texture, it's still youthful, but is drinking beautifully. It has another decade or longevity.

The 2007 Broken Stones (71% Syrah, 18% Grenache, and 11% Mourvedre) is a gorgeously seamless wine with an inky/blue/purple color, a tight but promising nose of blue and black fruits, incense, charcoal, and extraordinarily pure black raspberry and blackberry fruit, fabulous concentration in the mouth, velvety, well-integrated tannins, and a mind-bogglingly long finish. This wine will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15 or more.

A full-blown tour de force, pure, ripe, rich and focused, delivering blackberry, huckleberry, boysenberry and spicy mineral notes that are dense without being heavy. Layered and intricate, this is smooth, detailed and long on the finish. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre.

Saxum Winery Image
Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre based blends from the Templeton Gap of Paso Robles, California. We let our rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through our wines by keeping our yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. Production is kept at a total of 2200-2800 cases per year divided between 6 different cuvees, Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block and Bone Rock.
