The 2014 Mourvèdre Bedrock Vineyard comes from Morgan Peterson’s estate vineyard and is another perfumed, complex, incredibly high-quality wine from winemaker Jeff Ames. Ripe red fruits, incense, herbes de Provence, and complex spice characteristics all flow to a medium to full-bodied, seamless red that builds with time in the glass, has sweet tannin, no hard edges, and a great finish.
We're not your typical proprietors. We like to get our hands dirty in the vineyards and the cellar, thrive on taking risks that support what we believe in, and pride ourselves on remaining accessible to our community. Rudius is a true family affair — Jeff oversees every move from vine to bottle, while Britt ("the brains of the operation," as Jeff likes to say) manages everything in between. With many exciting developments on the horizon, we're thrilled to continue making and sharing exceptional wines with you for years to come.
Full of ripe fruit, and robust, earthy goodness, Mourvèdre is actually of Spanish provenance, where it still goes by the name Monastrell or Mataro. It is better associated however, with the Red Blends of the Rhône, namely Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Mourvèdre shines on its own in Bandol and is popular both as a single varietal wine in blends in the New World regions of Australia, California and Washington. Somm Secret—While Mourvèdre has been in California for many years, it didn’t gain momentum until the 1980s when a group of California winemakers inspired by the wines of the Rhône Valley finally began to renew a focus on it.
Perhaps the most historically significant appellation in Sonoma County, the Sonoma Valley is home to both Buena Vista winery, California's oldest commercial winery, and Gundlach Bundschu winery, California's oldest family-run winery.
It is also one of the more geologically and climactically diverse districts. The valley includes and overlaps four distinct Sonoma County sub-appellations, including Carneros, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma Mountain and Bennett Valley. With mountains, benchlands, plains, abundant sunshine and the cooling effects of the nearby Pacific, this appellation can successfully produce a wide range of grape varieties. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, and most notably, Zinfandel all thrive here. Ancient Zinfandel vines over 100 years old produce small crops of concentrated, spicy fruit, which in turn make some of the Valley's most unique wines. These can also be made as “field blends” (wines made from a mix of grape varieties grown in the same vineyard) along with Petite Sirah, Carignan and Alicante Bouschet.
