Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2015 Alexander’s Crown exhibits ripe flavors of black currant, blackberries and violets. The wine is voluptuous, has a rich mouthfeel, soft tannin's and a long lingering finish with notes of dried herbs and a touch of mocha. Enjoy this wine now or cellar it for enjoyment in 8 to 10 years.

Vibrant ripe black fruit and juicy red berries, layered with herbal notes and developing savoury aromas. Soft and enjoyable, with nice finesse and finish.

Rodney Strong planted this vineyard in 1971 on a dome rising out of the Alexander Valley floor. In line to receive the cooling afternoon breezes from the Pacific, this vineyard has often produced a cabernet on the far edge of lean; in 2015, however, the wine is firmly concentrated and luscious, though nothing close to a massive beast. For this vintage, winemaker Justin Seidenfeld separated the vineyard into ten blocks, based on factors such as aspect and, most importantly, flavor. That allowed him to fashion a wine with clear lines and detail to its purple plum and red berry flavors; its tannins have a quiet mineral intensity and a fruity chanterelle note. Silken and approachable, this will drink well over the next several years.

Bright in acidity and offering firm tannic structure, this lush wine is gracefully lengthy and powerful in weight. Red fruit, anise, fennel and sage provide a richness of flavor across the palate, with a depth of chocolate and blackberry jam that lingers on the finish.

COMMENTARY: Many local Sonoma County experts say that the Alexander Valley is the area's quintessential growing region for the county's Cabernet Sauvignon, and indeed the 2015 Rodney Strong Alexander's Crown displays the area well. TASTING NOTES. This wine is full bodied and well-built. Its aromas and flavors of red fruit and dried herbs should pair it nice with roast game. (Tasted: November 14, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Medium to deep ruby in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander's Crown is subdued on the nose, gradually revealing cassis, baked red and black cherries, pencil lead, coffee bean, cedar and dried tobacco-leaf aromas. Medium to full-bodied, it has a good core of chocolaty fruit, grainy tannins and great freshness on the sweet spice-laced finish. This is the best effort from Rodney Strong for this report—the other wines in the lineup are rustic and reduced to varying degrees. 1,229 cases were produced of the Alexander's Crown. Rating: 91+

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Alexander Valley Wine

Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley and many of the heavy-hitter producers have largely invested here.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 50% of plantings, Merlot and old vine Zinfandel thrive here. Ample, fleshy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate white wine production. Some old-vine plantings of Grenache have also been discovered and more recent experiments with Sangiovese and Barbera show great promise.
