Winemaker Notes

20% whole cluster, 15 days to dryness. Approximately 200 pounds of pressed Refosco skins added during fermentation. Wood basket pressed. 2 years in barrel. Never racked. Hand bottled.Phil Lovett’s vineyard overlooks Clear Lake at 1,700’ elevation on a steep NE facing hillside. Not certified organic but extremely hands off, very little vineyard input due to heavy winds from overlooking the lake that keeps mildew and pests at bay. Incredibly thick skins produced the worst yield at pressing ever. The label image depicts the green lion eating the sun (“vitriol” purifying matter and yielding gold) in a 1622 alchemy text. This image is a source of much controversy both in the chemical sense and metaphysical context, not uncommon in the highly interpretive alchemical arts.

This wine really captures the personality of the grape variety. Aromas are smoky, meaty and a touch earthy, while the flavors combine black pepper, dark chocolate and roasted fruit. It's an adventure in a bottle. Editors’ Choice

Prima Materia, California
Prima Materia is the product of two decades spent in vineyards, wineries, and cooking in restaurant kitchens that ranged from Michelin starred to hamburger consulting. I planted most of Prima Materia's grapes at 1,450' of elevation in Lake County's red volcanic soils, and every bottle and vine is nurtured with the goal of capturing a distinctive Old-World inflected voice in harmony with California's vast and evolving wine history. Prima Materia is a bottom-up adventure that begins with digging holes, pounding stakes, and constant time spent in the vineyard. Our equipment is minimalist with a focus on guiding the wines through the entire process to bottling with careful decisions made every step of the way. I am proud to work within an ancient agricultural tradition, and that vast, sometimes cyclical history is a central part of the winery's story and trajectory. ? Prima Materia wines are crafted in criminally small batches of two to ten barrels each. The winemaking and grape growing are of the intensive hands-on and sustainable sort, often using stems and time, gravity and buckets, rather than expensive impersonal machinery. Wines are unsulfured for much of their lives, allowing them to evolve as living things and new oak is rarely used. The wines are always unfined, unfiltered, hand harvested and hand bottled and most are estate grown. The alchemical theme of Prima Materia is significant both in the vague sense of food and wine alchemy, or the alchemy of agriculture and growth, but also in the Jungian idea of alchemy being the interaction between between us and the world we are exploring, both internal and external. Alchemy in this sense is the bold-yet-humble pursuit of knowledge through wonder, the natural and the personal, and uncovering hidden essence so that eventually art and craft might one day meet.

Full of ripe fruit, and robust, earthy goodness, Mourvèdre is actually of Spanish provenance, where it still goes by the name Monastrell or Mataro. It is better associated however, with the Red Blends of the Rhône, namely Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Mourvèdre shines on its own in Bandol and is popular both as a single varietal wine in blends in the New World regions of Australia, California and Washington. Somm Secret—While Mourvèdre has been in California for many years, it didn’t gain momentum until the 1980s when a group of California winemakers inspired by the wines of the Rhône Valley finally began to renew a focus on it.

Located within the greater Clear Lake appellation, the Red Hills AVA is perhaps the hottest spot right now in Lake County for new Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. Recognizing the potential of its volcanic and obsidian heavy soils, many respected growers are flocking to the area. Andy Beckstoffer, a leader in escalating the quality and recognition of Napa Valley, has already invested heavily in the area.
