Winemaker Notes

This is another tour de force from Pisoni, combining the vineyard’s signature power and richness with alluring depth and complexity. Super-concentrated, liqueur-like aromas of Bing cherry, plum, cassis, and cola leap from the glass, followed by notes of toasted cashews, ginger and clove. For all of its depth and richness, this wine literally sings on the palate, showing amazing energyand ample enlivening acidity to add poise and definition to the voluptuous flavors of red currant, cherry and milk chocolate. A true knockout, and certainly one of the finest expressions of Pisoni PinotNoir in many years.

The 2014 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard is from the Santa Lucia Highlands. This sees 75% new French oak and has been one of the bright, shining stars of the portfolio for many years. The Pisoni Vineyard was, according to vineyard legend, planted with a suitcase clone from one of the most famous vineyards in Vosne-Romanée. This has a high amount of French oak (75%) because this is always the richest wine in the portfolio. The 2014 does possess a deeper, ruby/purple color, beautiful, opulent blackcurrant and brooding black fruit characteristics, with forest floor and a floral note followed by a full-bodied, sumptuous texture. This is a bigger wine, cutting a much deeper and larger swath across the palate, and should drink well for up to a decade or more.

There's a sultry aromatic combination of stewed strawberry and bright raspberry as well as subtle thyme, tarragon, rosewater and French toast on the nose of this bottling from the iconic vineyard. The baked red fruits and hard woody spices are cut by pungent acidity and firm tannins on the sip. Hold off a bit on this one, but then enjoy for decades.

Patz and Hall Wine Company was founded in 1988 by Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses and Heather Patz, and is dedicated to the production of hand-crafted wines. The four are long-time Napa Valley residents and wine industry professionals, with a wide variety of experiences. Patz and Hall produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines from selected vineyard sources in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Monterey counties. The Patz and Hall method is to work closely with each of their growers to achieve a unique expression of the vineyard site and deliver wines that reflect both the site and their vision for great wine.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Perhaps the most highly regarded appellation within Monterey County, Santa Lucia Highlands AVA benefits from a combination of warm morning sunshine and brisk afternoon breezes, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and fully. The result is concentrated, flavorful wines that retain their natural acidity. Wineries here do not shy away from innovation, and place a high priority on sustainable viticultural practices.

The climatic conditions here are perfectly suited to the production of ripe, rich Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These Burgundian varieties dominate an overwhelming percentage of plantings, though growers have also found success with Syrah, Riesling and Pinot Gris.
