Winemaker Notes

2013 Unfiltered Chardonnay reflects the opulence and profound intensity of the vintagewith rich complex and vibrant fruit flavors balanced by savory barrel fermentationinfluences. The aromas of grapefruit, honey, vanilla, brioche and apricot are freshand inviting. The palate is intense and powerful with rich fig and pear fruit flavorsbalanced by subtle creamy oak, nutty savory notes and a long lingering finish.

While most people think of Chardonnay as a fish and fowl wine, we like to pair it withthe unexpected: a grilled veal chop or pork tenderloin. Of course it's also deliciouswith mushroom dishes of all sorts and one of our favorites is risotto with chanterellesand shitakes.

John Kongsgaard told me that when the unfiltered Chardonnay from Newton was first launched in the early 1980s, the fruit came entirely from what is now the Judge Vineyard of Kongsgaard. No wonder that wine was so spectacular in those days. It also had an incredible aging curve as well. This wine continues to be a strong effort. The 2013 Chardonnay Unfiltered exhibits notes of white peach, honeysuckle and some brioche in a medium to full-bodied, lusciously fruity, rich, complex and full style. It doesn’t have the minerality of the old days of the early 1980s, but this is a brilliant Chardonnay, representing one of Napa’s finest efforts.

New winemaking and a sizable replanting effort at the producer's Spring Mountain estate are starting to show dividends in this new release, a full-bodied style true to its heritage. Bright acidity pops around a taste of pomelo and yuzu, giving the wine a zest of lemon before a caramelized finish.

Newton Vineyard Winery Video

Newton was founded in 1977 by English businessman Peter Newton and his Chinese wife Su Hua. Peter Newton was already renowned as a pioneer of winemaking in the Napa Valley, having founded the Sterling Winery near Calistoga in the 1960s. The Newtons transformed one square mile of rolling hillside in Spring Mountain into one of the Napa Valley’s most prestigious estates, whose wines have graced the official dinners of several US presidents.

The Newton estate encompasses 170 acres of prime Napa Valley terroir, distributed over four separate, wholly owned vineyards: Spring Mountain, Yountville, Mount Veeder and Carneros.

Newton is renowned for producing wines that are uniquely characterful expressions of varietals emblematic of the Napa Valley, notably Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Working patiently with nature, we are committed to precision viticulture and winemaking techniques yielding wines that are acclaimed for their balance, harmony and full, abundant flavors.
