    Winemaker Notes

The 2015 Mossback Pinot Noir is a blend of Russian River Valley fruit sourced from growers that winemaker Dan Cederquist has worked with for over 20 years. A great cherry and ruby red color in the glass leads to inviting aromas of black cherry, cream cola, licorice and vanilla. A soft, silky entry is followed by complex layers of fleshy plum, black cherry and vanilla. The 2015 Pinot Noir has a pleasingly long finish with lingering dark fruit and cocoa powder. This is a well-structured wine that is sure to please and will pair exceptionally well with pork and duck dishes.

    Mossback, California

Mossback is part of the Matchbook Wine Company’s family of brands. Mossback is an old fashioned term for farmer. The Giguiere family has had a long history of farming, and for the Mossback brand has sought fruit from some of the most renowned farmers in the Russian River Valley. Mossback also speaks to the cool weather that contributes to the unique quality of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the coastal region.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
