Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The wine has a light straw color with green tints and is in bright condition. Immediately one noses the glass, there is an impact of Sauvignon Blanc zesty notes – grass, leaf and passionfruit, in fact almost musky and Gewurztraminer–like, bolstered by lemon sherbet from the Semillon. When describing the Moss Wood Semillon, the sheer quality of 2017 and this thread runs through the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon as well. The depth of fruit on the palate is tremendous and while the wine has the classic, acid freshness of the style, the high-quality vintage has given it generosity and length we don’t often see.

This vintage of Moss Wood’s SBS is on fire. Thanks partly to partial fermentation in old oak barrels, it has a Bordelais vibe about it mixed with some West Aussie sunshine. The complex nose offers notes of yeasty apples and pears, honeyed nuts, beeswax, florals and a wet stone, copper penny minerality. The palate is highly textured with depth and focus. Fruit rides in the passenger seat while those mineral notes shine. Drink now–2026. American Spirits Exchange Ltd.

Some grassy, herbal and nettley aromas with guava and gooseberries ahead of lemon-driven citrus. Lots to enjoy now. The palate is smooth and fleshy, delivering a crisp, lively impression. Drink now. Screw cap.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Moss Wood Sauvignon Blanc - Semillon is attractive, lush, and lasting. TASTING NOTES: This wine shows excellent richness on the palate and crispness in the finish. Enjoy its aromas and flavors of tart citrus, appealing savory spices with yellowtail wrapped in nori. (Tasted: February 5, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Moss Wood, Australia
Moss Wood Winery Video

Moss Wood was established as a specialist, high-quality winery. This was its raison d’être and still provides the motivation for its continued existence. The proprietors of Moss Wood, Clare and Keith Mugford, have been making wine and tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 and 1979, respectively. It is their belief that all decisions made in the vineyard, or at the winery, are based on the effect they will have on the quality of the wine. As a new wine producing area, Margaret River has a short viticultural history, therefore winemakers need to be continually reassessing their soil management practices and the performance of their vines if they are to understand the viticulture of the region and obtain the best results in the vineyard. The Moss Wood and Mugford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality.

Sometimes light and crisp, other times rich and creamy, Bordeaux White Blends typically consist of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Often, a small amount of Muscadelle or Sauvignon Gris is included for added intrigue. Popularized in Bordeaux, the blend is often mimicked throughout the New World. Somm Secret—Sauternes and Barsac are usually reserved for dessert, but they can be served before, during or after a meal. Try these sweet wines as an aperitif with jamón ibérico, oysters with a spicy mignonette or during dinner alongside hearty Alsatian sausage.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
