Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The graceful power of this wine greets you on the nose with aromas of ripe blueberries, fresh cracked pepper, leather and clove. The complexity on the nose carries through in the mouth. The velvety tannins are sleek and balanced by a delicate acid frame that leads into a long finish of ripe fruit and notes of toast.

At the winery, the handpicked fruit was destemmed and placed into small fermentors where they were punched down two or three times a day during fermentation to gently extract color and tannin. Once the optimal level of tannin was extracted, the wine was drained and the skins gently pressed. The wine was then racked to barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation and 24 months of aging in French and American oak. Blend: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot

Professional Ratings

Here is a well-built, Bordeaux-style blend based largely upon Cabernet Sauvignon, with 12% Malbec and 6% Petit Verdot filling it out. Firm, dark and muscular, this mixes tart black fruit flavors with streaks of licorice and peppery herbs.

Mercer Estates, Washington
Mercer Estates Winery Video

Mercer was the founding member of Washington’s highest accoladed AVA, Horse Heaven Hills. Their vineyard at one time included, and still adjoins, the source of Washington’s first Parker-rated 100 point wines. Mercer Ranch was homesteaded by the Mercer family in 1886 and was planted to vines in 1972. The family still supplies grapes to some of the state’s leading wine brands, as well as its own Mercer Family Vineyards label, which consistently produces Cabernet Sauvignons rated 90+ by the leading wine critics.
