    Soft magenta in color, rich aromatics of cherry pie filling, orange tea, cocoa powderand rosehip oil mingle with herbal touches of fresh thyme, fennel grass and eucalyptus. Othercomponents of cranberry compote, fish oil and roasted red beets flirt in the background. The palateimpression is high toned and feminine finishing with grip and persistence.

    Melville is a family-owned, 100% estate, organic vineyard and winery in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County.

    They produce Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and a small amount of Grenache. All their wines, from the flagship Estate

    Pinot Noir to the Small Lot Collection Donna's Block Syrah, are hand-grown and hand-made 100 cases at a time.

    Their founder Ron Melville carefully selected the location of the estate for its proximity to the Pacific Ocean as well as

    the soil composition - predominantly sandy loam and diatomaceous earth with sections of clay. You can be too close

    to the ocean and struggle with getting fruit ripe, and you can also be further away and struggle with temperatures that

    are too hot...Melville is in the sweet spot.

    The Melville's have been practicing responsible farming for over three decades, and since 1997 in the Sta. Rita Hills

    when brothers Chad and Brent Melville planted the estate vineyards (before the AVA was formally established). They

    take great pride in their commitment to "winegrowing"…working in harmony with Mother Nature to nurture their land

    through organic and sustainable farming practices to ensure that all of the most crucial work is done in the vineyard.

    The Sta. Rita Hills AVA is incredibly unique for a few reasons:

    • It lies within a transverse mountain range, meaning that the mountains on either side of the valley are running

    east-to-west from the ocean rather than north-to south. This is the only transverse mountain range in North

    America.

    • It has the longest growing season in North America. The growing season starts early (bud bread in late

    February) and ends relatively late (Melville is often harvesting into late November) because they have a mild winter

    and a cold, sunny summer. This environment of consistent "cold sunshine" allows for a long, slow ripening

    and wines that showcase high acidity with ripe aromas/flavors.

    Stylistically, They choose to only use neutral wood. With the vines being 25+ years old, they have reached a maturity

    that Melville is proud of. The vines are creating the best fruit ever and they want their customers taste the flavors of Sta.

    Rita Hills and Mother Nature in their purest form.

    Stem inclusion during fermentation has been a key to Melville wines. They create aromatic lift, add tannins, and can

    bring another dimension of flavor to the palate, including savoriness and spiciness. When using stems, it is important

    to ensure they are fully ripe to avoid green, unpleasant, vegetal flavors. Fortunately, the Sta. Rita Hills' long growing

    season allows for fully ripened stems.

    Let’s start with the obvious – Central Coast Pinot Noir is an incredibly broad category. This of course is because the Central Coast appellation is enormous, and it contains several stellar Pinot Noir regions within it, all of them kept cool by elevation or proximity to the ocean (or both). So we’ll break things down a bit with a brief look at each of these: Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey and the Santa Lucia Highlands, Santa Maria Valley and Sta. Rita Hills. These are not the only Central Coast sources of good Pinot Noir, but they are the major ones. So let’s get started.

    In the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation, just west of Silicon Valley, producers craft excellent Pinot in spite of serious challenges. The land is mountainous, rugged and can be foggy, the topsoil is thin and poor and yields tend to be low. Yet Pinots from the likes of David Bruce, Martin Ray, Mount Eden and Thomas Fogarty exhibit undeniable quality, along with bright red fruit, minerality, earth and herbal hints.

    Just south lies the large Monterey appellation. Monterey Pinot Noir is grown in coastal areas, taking optimal advantage of the cooling effect of the Pacific. The most highly regarded of these is the Santa Lucia Highlands. Situated on hilly benchlands south of the city of Monterey, this central coast region relies on a long growing season, night and morning fog and consistent afternoon winds to produce world class Pinot Noir. Attributes include intense, rich fruit, subtle earthy notes, spice and a silky texture. Look for producers like Siduri, Kosta Browne, Talbott and Lucienne.

    The Santa Maria Valley in northern Santa Barbara County (a section of it falls into southern San Luis Obispo County) is also a haven for quality Pinot Noir. A mere 15 miles from the Pacific, the valley runs east-west, creating a natural tunnel through which ocean breezes and fog flow. This effect lengthens the growing season and promotes both ripeness and development of acidity, lending Santa Maria Valley Pinots their characteristic full flavor, balance and elegance. The famous Bien Nacido Vineyard is located here, and notable producers include Cambria, Foxen, Byron and Au Bon Climat.

    Finally, we arrive at the Sta. Rita Hills, also in Santa Barbara County. Located in the western part of the Santa Ynez Valley, it too benefits from an east-west orientation that leads to the same conditions mentioned above. Once again the result is extended hang time for the grapes, which can be tasted in the vibrant, ripe red fruits evident in these Pinots, along with dense coloration and an impression of richness and intensity. Try wines from producers like Ken Brown, Ampelos, Fess Parker and Melville.
