Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This wine is full bodied, warm, silky, with aromas of dark red berries and ripe tannins giving great structure and body, pleasant to drink with mineral notes that give the wine a special character. Aged 5 months in new French oak barrels and then 2 years in the bottle to create an extraordinary complexity.

This wine complements stews, steak, lamb and pork chop dishes.

Professional Ratings

There’s a lot of wood here, but it’s nicely integrated within the notes of charcuterie, blackberries, elderberries and vanilla. Big and juicy, this is also quite suave and structured, drawing on long laces of sharply pulled tannins. Loads of fruit on the chewy finish.

Eguren Ugarte is a family winery founded in 1870 by Mr. Vitorino Eguren Ugarte, currently ran by the sixth generation of men and women dedicated to the fascinating world of growing vines and winemaking. Thanks to this, they have managed to preserve many of the traditional winemaking techniques and practices, as well as incorporating some of the latest technologies and techniques to enhance the winemaking processes. All this results in exceptional wines that win major national and international awards.

They are located in the beautiful Rioja Alavesa, where they cultivate their philosophy of caring for the environment and sustainable winegrowing. In the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria and surrounded by 130 hectares of vines, a perfect place to learn and enjoy the wine experience.

Martin Cendoya wine is produced by the Eguren Ugarte family and is named after Martín, Vitorino’s brother in law. This wine is created from an old vineyard on the hillside.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
