Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2016 SLH pinot is reminiscent of our very popular 2012 SLH pinot with a nose of floral notes, ripe berries, and dried herbs all playing off each other in fragrant harmony. The wine was aged in French oak (25% new) for 15 months before bottling. With Cortada Alta fruit now in the mix, there's also a darker berry aspect to the aromas as well. Soft and rich on the palate, the typically tart Peterson fruit is balanced out nicely by the more opulent Cortada Alta fruit. This wine is already drinking well and should continue to improve through 2023.

This appellation blend is better than the winery's single-vineyard expressions, at least right now. On the nose, loads of chaparral spice play against the cranberry, mulberry and roasted tomato backdrop, enhanced with a touch of shiitake mushroom. The palate packs strong sagebrush and eucalyptus flavors with salted plum fruits.

COMMENTARY: The Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noirs keep on coming, and the 2016 Mansfield-Dunne is at the top of the class. TASTING NOTES: This wine is packed with black fruit aromas and flavors. A hint dried herbs and earth suggest a pairing with grilled lamb chops. (Tasted: September 10, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Mansfield-Dunne, California
Mansfield-Dunne Wines is the culmination of a 10 year effort of John and Lynn Peterson to secure land in the Santa Lucia Highlands with the goal to grow premium pinot noir and chardonnay grapes and produce wine from those grapes. They have long been pinot noir and chardonnay lovers and (John at least) long harbored the goal of developing a vineyard and label focused on these varietals. After discovering the Santa Lucia Highlands area in 2001 and meeting Ed Kurtzman and a couple of the local growers, they were impressed with the potential of the appellation and quickly concluded this was the place to focus their dream project. After years of searching, they secured an undeveloped property at the base of the mountains up Big Bench Road in 2009. In 2010 they secured what is now the Peterson Vineyard alongside River Road, which was already planted to 8.8 acres of pinot noir. They planted an acre of chardonnay there in 2011 and produced a very limited quantity of their first chardonnay in 2015. As friends of Ed Kurtzman and big fans of his wines, the Petersons were very happy that he was willing to join them in this journey. Ed is extremely familiar with pinot noir and chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, and they knew their grapes would be in the best of hands. After 4 years of drilling water wells and vineyard planing, the Petersons finally began the development of their second property in the Santa Lucia Highlands in 2014. This property is at higher elevation of 1100-1300 feet and gives them the opportunity to work with a different microclimate within the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. So far they have planted 30.3 more acres of pinot noir, 7.9 more acres of chardonnay and a tiny bit each of syrah and viognier. They experienced their first small production of pinot noir, chardonnay, and syrah from the new vineyard in 2016 and have named the new vineyard Cortada Alta.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Perhaps the most highly regarded appellation within Monterey County, Santa Lucia Highlands AVA benefits from a combination of warm morning sunshine and brisk afternoon breezes, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and fully. The result is concentrated, flavorful wines that retain their natural acidity. Wineries here do not shy away from innovation, and place a high priority on sustainable viticultural practices.

The climatic conditions here are perfectly suited to the production of ripe, rich Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These Burgundian varieties dominate an overwhelming percentage of plantings, though growers have also found success with Syrah, Riesling and Pinot Gris.
