Winemaker Notes

This is a superbly elegant white which personifies the classic Burgundian paradox of intensity without weight. From a south-facing exposition this shows ideal ripeness with candied apple and lemon kurd notes, with added complexity of wet stones, tangy spice and subtle oak influence. This is a special Grand Cru which should age effortlessly for many years.

From Pougets. The Jadot habit is to show this after the Montrachet, but it maanges to stand up all the same. The 2019 is really quite a complex wine. Sunny of course, but not over-ripe, this is definitely a big wine, not much more than 14%, but explosive on the palate. This wine can carry it, but you will really have to wait to enjoy it at its best.

Aromas of citrus zest, freshly baked bread, beeswax, buttered popcorn and vanilla pod introduce the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a full-bodied, satiny, layered wine that's rich and muscular, with a concentrated, structured core of fruit girdled by racy acids and chalky dry extract. Long and resonant, it will reward patience. Best after 2027.

From a domaine-owned plot facing due south in Les Pougets, purchased by the Jadot family in the 19th century. Somewhat closed initially, but opening with a bit of time to show a ripe pear fruit character, with hints of beeswax and fresh hay. On the palate, the wine is rich and substantial, with balanced acidity that reflects the southern exposition. With time this should open well, for there is a lot of potential here.

A rich, creamy style, featuring peach, apple, lemon and vanilla aromas and flavors underlined by vibrant structure. Tightens up as this evolves through the finish, where oak spice accents linger. Drink now

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Aloxe-Corton Wine

Cote de Beaune, Burgundy

Prevailing over the charming village of Aloxe, the hill of Corton actually commands the entire appellation. Corton is the only Grand Cru for Pinot Noir in the entire Côte de Beaune. Its Grand Crus red wines can be described simply as “Corton” or Corton hyphenated with other names. These vineyards cover the southeast face of the hill of Corton where soils are rich in red chalk, clay and marl.

Dense and austere when young, the best Corton Pinot Noir will peak in complexity and flavor after about a decade, offering some of the best rewards in cellaring among Côte de Beaune reds. Pommard and Volnay offer similar potential.

The great whites of the village are made within Corton-Charlemagne, a cooler, narrow band of vineyards at the top of the hill that descends west towards the village of Pernand-Vergelesses. Here the thin and white stony soils produce Chardonnay of exceptional character, power and finesse. A minimum of five years in bottle is suggested but some can be amazing long after. Fully half of Aloxe-Corton is considered Grand Cru.
