Winemaker Notes

Another vintage sourced entirely from Sta. Rita Hills!! Cherry cola, sassafras, purple flowers, and clove are the prominent profiles on this elegant Pinot Noir. Radian, Spear, Sanford & Benedict, and La Rinconada vineyards. 12 months in barrel, 10% of which was new French oak. Just a hint of stem inclusion to give structure.

A great match for grilled pork chops, chicken satay, Korean BBQ pork belly, or tri-tip.

Moving to the reds, the 2019 Pinot Noir SBC (mostly destemmed and brought up in 10% new French oak) reveals a ruby hue as well as a terrific perfume of ripe red fruits (strawberries, raspberries) intermixed with classic leafy herbs, forest floor, and spice-laced aromas and flavors. Pure, clean, and classic on the palate, it's medium-bodied, has beautiful fruit, silky tannins, and is just an incredibly charming, satisfying Pinot Noir to enjoy over the coming 4-5 years.

Liquid Farm, California
Liquid Farm Jeff Nelson, Owner Winery Image

While the project was started in 2009, the name Liquid Farm was thought of long before there was wine in barrel. Their goal was to create awareness about what happens above ground and below ground, and tell the story of how both are inextricably linked to wine. Wine is, after all, a product of the earth and the human touch. It is Liquid from Farming.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

A superior source of California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills is the coolest, westernmost sub-region of the larger Santa Ynez Valley appellation within Santa Barbara County. This relatively new AVA is unquestionably one to keep an eye on.

The climate of Sta. Rita Hills is a natural match for Chardonnay and Pinot noir, thanks to the crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich calcareous soil. Here, grapes ripen just enough, while retaining brisk acidity and harmonious balance.
