Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A concentrated and rich bouquet of ripe blackcurrants and juicy black cherries. Underlying bay leaf, fresh tobacco, anise, clove and cumin enhances the nose with varietal lift and complexity, while floral nuances of lavender and violets add perfume and fragrance. An intense and well-appointed palate. Ripe currants and black forest fruits are abundant, with textures and layers that fold and intertwine. Dustiness, anise and cocoa characters complement the fruit, which is aligned with a lively acid structure, leading to a seamless tannin profile.

Outstanding—95 points. Since 2002, led by winemaker Paul Atwood, working with viticulturist David Winstanley, Leeuwin has embarked on a new programme to refine its Cabernet so that it would stand shoulder to shoulder with the Art Series Chardonnay at the top of the varietal tree. With 38 years of vine age, the best batches of fruit come from moderate-yielding, home-block estate vines grown on free-draining, gravelly soils and picked at optimum ripening followed by a gentle fermentation and blending to French oak

The purity of this cabernet is impressive, its clear black currant flavors fresh and crisp, uninhibited by its oak aging, presented as a beautiful, unadorned claret. Herbal notes lift the aroma—it’s not aggressively green, but the wine has the same clean sensation as biting into a parsley leaf. Young cabernet fruit and gentle tannins come together in a structure that’s elegant, lasting on freshness that will sustain it for a decade or more in the cellar.

The oak in the 2010 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is more subtle than in the 2005, while the cassis notes are turned up and more concentrated. Still showing some vanilla, this medium to full-bodied wine still probably has another 10 years left in the tank, as evidenced by the long, mouthwatering finish.

This is slightly bigger and bolder than the 2009 Art Series Cabernet, but remains a relatively streamlined and silky rendering of the variety. Potent cedar and vanilla notes frame dark fruit aromas and flavors, while the finish lingers, echoing with wood overtones. Drink now–2025.

Leeuwin Estate, Australia
Leeuwin Estate Winery Video
Leeuwin Estate, one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district of Western Australia was established in 1973 with its mission statement to: "Produce wines that rank with the best in the world through the pursuit of excellence".

In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to owners, Denis and Tricia Horgan in the establishment of Leeuwin Estate. The first vines were planted by hand over a five year period from 1973.

Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.

Maintaining a team of highly skilled and dedicated winemakers, Leeuwin Estate is now under the direction of two generations of the founding family.
