Winemaker Notes

This SRH bottling continues to showcase the cool climate character of Syrah as grown in the Santa Rita Hills. 2011 was a cool and a late harvest with a small crop. In spite of the coolness the vines matured well and we picked at optimum ripeness. The wine shows intensity and complexity.

Fresh and zesty, with dark berry, pepper and chewy tannins lending personality and depth. Tightens up on the finish.

Lafond Winery, California
Lafond Winery Winery Image
Lafond is Pierre Lafond's second winery, with its first crush in 2000. The winery is surrounded by 100 acres of vineyards. The natural environment and the marvelous vistas enhance the experience. The winery and vineyards are located in the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley in the Sta. Rita Hills. Proximity to the ocean favors this area with cool breezes and a climate marked by warm days, cool nights and a long growing season.

Lafond is dedicated to producing limited quantities of Sta. Rita Hills Vineyard and Appellation designated Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay. The purpose of these single designations is to highlight the distinctions of soil and climate and create continuity in these slight but significant differences. Lafond SRH are single varietal bottling of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Grown and crafted exclusively in the Sta. Rita Hills (SRH) AVA, these cool climate gems hit the mark in depth and finesse and stand alone as one of the best buys in the region.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
