Winemaker Notes

The fragrant nose offers a broad array of autumnal notes – woodsy spice, leaf litter and earth, alongside bright wild berries and a subtle cured meatiness. The core of the wine carries a juicy and sappy mid-weight texture that is firmly supported with a dusting of finely integrated tannin. Black cherry and raspberry flavors lead into a long and intense finish.

    The 2015 vintage in Mornington yielded dark concentrated wines. This one is atypically (for the estate) full bodied and bold as a result, with plum and black-cherry fruit and hints of mint, sage and bay leaf. Long and a bit drying on the finish, it needs a couple of years to come into balance. Drink 2020–2030.

Chris and Gail Aylward established Kooyong in 1995. The Aylwards were introduced to the wine industry when purchasing a farm at Shoreham, on the Mornington Peninsula. The site contained three acres of Chardonnay vines.

At this time the Peninsula was rapidly expanding, establishing itself as a premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape-growing region of Australia. Both of these varieties were suited to this cool maritime climate. The Aylwards were inspired to develop a second site, specifically selected for its potential to produce top quality fruit. Wine released under the Kooyong label comes exclusively from this site.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
