KC Labs, an experimental side project, is all about bucking the traditions of California wine, and there's no better example than the KC Labs Zinfandel. The fruit is grown at Venturi Vineyard in Mendocino, and is harvested early then allowed to ferment carbonically without being crushed. This process allows to take what is normally a jammy, tannic, and high-alcohol variety and turn it into a light, fresh summertime wine. Served chilled, this wine will challenge your perceptions of what Zin can be and what it should be.
After leaving a career in consulting in his early twenties, Jordan Kivelstadt traveled the world making wine in California, Australia, Chile and Argentina. In 2007, Jordan made 125 cases of Estate Syrah. He drew inspiration both from his winemaking experiences in the new world and his family’s passion for European cuisine, art and wine culture. Hence, the focus became exploring the product of incredible California vineyards, with a nod toward the rich history and balance of the old world wines that came before.
Since the inaugural 2007 vintage, production has grown to 3,500 cases annually. Kivelstadt Cellars strives to create wines of intrigue that maintain a fun and approachable style and challenge the status quo of conventional California wines.
Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.
A large and diverse appellation within California’s North Coast AVA, Mendocino is home to several smaller sub-regions—most notably the Anderson Valley. This scenic region, with rolling hills covered in redwood forests as well as vineyards, is one of the world’s top producers of certified organically-grown grapes. Due to wide geographical and climatic variation, a vast array of wine styles can be found here.
