Winemaker Notes
This wine is a 23 year old dry farmed Chardonnay grown in a deep, sandy subset of the Gold Ridge soil series that seemingly has no bottom. The vines mine the nutrient poor sands to produce a wine of unparalleled energy and verve. One of our perennial favorites due to its resounding natural acids and low pH which strike a perfect balance with the stone fruit body and notes of toasted hazelnut.

The medium gold-colored 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard comes from a great site in Carneros and has a pretty, complex bouquet citrus, apple, brioche, and salty minerality as well as tons of white flower notes. Medium-bodied, it has a distinct marine-like salinity, terrific balance, and a clean, crisp finish. It’s another remarkable Chardonnay from this team.

Decanter
This vineyard in the heart of cool Carneros was founded in 1979, with Chardonnay as the first priority. Kistler has sourced fruit from it since 1994. The maritime climate of cool fog and breezes from San Francisco Bay give the wine classic balance and the steely zing of acidity. It has a lighter citrus-herb-mineral feel and a very long salty finish.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard has a delicate nose of apricot, quince peel and red apple skin with notes of honeyed almonds, toast, gunflint and dried flowers with a spicy undercurrent. It's medium-bodied, broad and rounded in the mouth with intense savory fruit layers opposed by tangy acidity, finishing very long on a mineral note.

Connoisseurs' Guide
Kistler’s Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay is the second of two seriously good examples from Carneros and earns its spurs for both depth and polish. It is a beautifully balanced, moderately full-bodied effort that is at once supple, structured and lively with precise fruit to spare and a seamlessly fit complement of lovely oak that imparts a touch of crème brûlée-like sweetness to its wonderfully sustained, mineral-tinged fruit. It is another member of its brood that is understandably hard to resist now and yet clearly capable of aging famously for years

Wine Spectator
Viscous, creamy richness accents the concentrated citrus, ripe apple, apricot and white currant flavors that are plush and lusciously spiced. The refined finish offers ample peach cobbler accents.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
Known for elegant wines that combine power and finesse, Carneros is set in the rolling hills that straddle the southernmost parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The cooling winds from the abutting San Pablo Bay, combined with lots of midday California sunshine, create an ideal environment for producing wines with a perfect balance of crisp acidity and well-ripened fruit.
This cooler pocket of California lends itself to growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Carneros is an important source of sparkling wines made in the style of Champagne as well.
