    Winemaker Notes

The Whiplash 2016 red wine has a lovely, dark cherry hue and opens with warm, comforting aromas. A fruit forward wine with dark cherry, fig and mixed berry pie flavors with hints of baking spices such as fresh clove and butterscotch and earthy tones. Bright pomegranate notes reveal the wine’s balanced acidity. Medium-bodied with good lift and juicy tannins that leave you wanting another sip. Smooth tannins grip the midpalate and leave an easy finish of sweet oak.

Pairs beautifully with a wide range of foods and is enhanced by sauces with a hint of sweetness. Barbequed pork, Chicken Tikka Masala, Peking Duck, or a flavorful pasta with tomato sauce are all delicious complements.

    Blend: 25% Malbec, 24% Tempranillo, 15% Merlot, 15% Barbera, 11% Syrah, 7% Lagrein, 3% Pinot Noir

    Jamieson Ranch Vineyards Winery Image
Jamieson Ranch Vineyards is the southernmost winery in the Napa Valley, one of the world’s foremost winemaking regions. The estate’s more than 300 acres of gently rolling hills and terraced vineyards benefit from the cooling fog and breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay, climatic conditions that favor the production of exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The unique architecture of Jamieson Ranch Vineyards is reminiscent of a majestic western mountain lodge, replete with soaring ceilings, seating around a cozy fireplace, an observation gallery overlooking the barrel room and production area, and a spectacular wraparound veranda that affords sweeping views of the Napa Valley and San Pablo Bay.

California is a winemaking colossus; by itself it is the fourth largest producer in the world. Red wine accounts for 56% of the total by volume, and red grapes 63% of total acres planted. In addition, a number of California red wines are heralded as being among the most prestigious and sought-after wines in the world.

While the state’s incredibly diverse geography, soils and microclimates allow for a wide array of styles, the key factor unifying California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season. This leads to well-developed fruit marked both by impressive ripeness and balancing acidity.

The state’s most famous red wine region, of course, is Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns as king. But California boasts a wealth of other impressive appellations. The much larger and climatically varied Sonoma County also produces world class California Cabernet, along with wonderful examples of California Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.

Fine versions of Cabernet and Zinfandel hail from Paso Robles as well, which is also gaining fame with Rhone varietals like Syrah and Grenache. As for Pinot Noir, terrific examples can be found from AVA’s such as Anderson Valley, Carneros, Santa Lucia Highlands and Sta. Rita Hills. Wineries in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties are making wonderful Syrahs, and the Sierra Foothill appellations are proving to be an experimental hotbed, with Italian and Spanish varietals employed to great effect.

This of course is a mere sketch. The subject of California red wine is as deep and broad as an ocean, and absolutely a joy to explore!
